my understanding was that god's intelligence and greatness of power was enough that we both have preordained lives and free will, in that we're so much simpler than god that he can predict exactly how you'll live the course of your life, without actually having to interfere in the least.
Environment can have an influence on who we are and it can help or hurt a person realize who they are and where they belong in the world, but in no way are those factors predestine who you are and where you could go in life. Scientists always try to discover what makes us human. Where do they look to discover this? They mostly look into the brain and how it functions. But, to me, they are looking in the wrong place. The human soul is a lot more complex than the functions of the human brain. We are all self contained vessels, but that these vessels have an overall destination to go to. It is up to us to discover how, in our own way, how we will arrive at that destination. Imagine a boat and as it travels across the ocean environmental factors are pushing and turning you, while you try your best to keep control. Sometimes you dodge the storms, sometimes you don't, but you always have this ability to dodge and not be a mere condition of these storms. You have point A to arrive at, but while you get there, you decide how you can get there as you try to contend with the forces. You can crash and sink, or you can persevere. It's up to you. While being this vessel, the vessel can decide to be carried away by helpful forces. Think of it as the current of God, guiding the vessel to get to where it needs to go. The vessel can decide to enter this current or not. If choose not to use this current then it can be a much more bumpy ride. You can still get to your destination, but bruised up and beaten. If only that vessel too advantage of the current.
