You know what I might be thinking of? Vitamin B12. I know, it doesn't even sound like beta carotene. But I was talking with my doctors about vitamin deficiency in a vegan (or rather "plant-based") diet. You need a supplement because B12 occurs naturally only in animal products. And without B12 you get brain damage sometimes; probably only after a long time.
