    But all education is self education, I can't learn without wanting to learn, unless you want to get into conditioned response and things of that nature.
    Ideally, institutionalized education is a means to help you educate yourself. It is an environment designed to offer you the means to reach your goal of gaining knowledge.

    So I guess teaching kids to read is brainwashing now. Or is it only if it takes place in a school?

    I think that would depend on if you are teaching kids to read or breaking them down so that they fit a certain mold.

    Well, I am still really glad that my parents made me go to school and it definitely didn't break me down and force me into a certain mold.

    I think religions are worse than schools for forcing kids into molds. But that is another thread...

    same here. they cleaned the mold out of the locker rooms a couple years before i got there.

    chances are that you are younger than me ;).

    Indeed, that is a problem not only in one's native tongue. Imagine all the people for whose English is not their first or second language. We they strange or funny things all the time ;).

    yepp, something like that. On one hand I think people are free to stay dumb, but on the other hand I feel bad because I should care about society.

    nope, you don't live in a free country, neither do I. I'mquite sure one does not have the right to take a dump at, hm, say the Grand Place or in front of the town hall. But you can start an experiment and see what happens ;).

    well, I beg to differ ;). I'm not a man of faith, but the above statement is too broad, too general. Religion can have those effects. But there are many scientists, who believe in a higher being of some form, who have proven their analytical and critical thinking skills. You can be, let's say, a physicist and believe in a christian god without any conflict. Physics does not make a statement about god, it works well with or without a god.
