I like them BUT.... I'm not sure I like that apparently when you write on someone's profile page-guestbook how it shows up as a status update.
I'm not sure how the whole status update works (as far as commenting on someone elses profile) but I kind of liked it the way it was on the last board for leaving comments, etc.
i don't like how comments show up as status updates. also, my own "status update" included information from a different site that i made on google. i don't know how that got there at all...and i tried to delete it. but it comes back unless i have a different status update. [new site is great though, don't wanna sound like a complainer. i hope that most of my old posts and especially my blog comes back though]
That is very strange I think about the other site comment. I don't think I like stuff like that... nope...
You should be able to control whether you get status updates from Google. I'm not even sure that would happen automatically. We don't have any remote logins allowed presently. In fact there is no google code enabled on this site AFAIK.
I'm not fond of the status updates either. They're a bit too much like FB. And they're someone intrusive into the conversations. Funny thing is I was going to reply to PR's little rant about taking a dump, but after I wrote my reply, I realized that if it was taken out-of-context, like in the status updates, it would mean something completely different and cast my's words in a very unfavorable light as a result. So for THAT reason alone, it's not a good idea as it will inhibit ppl from posting visitor message (status updated). Do we really care if PR takes a dump and how it comes out? To me that may be one of the Web's great failings - encouraing ppl to post the most trivial things as though they were somehow so important that they need to be on the front page of such a site as this... I'd sooner see more recent threads or other interesting info about the site. So it's going to go and be replaced by something else.
I will say one good thing about it though, it sure helps the mods see what's going on in the Visitor messages area. They're more likely to catch a troll or spammer that way. Otherwise mods have no way to know what's being posted on ppl's profiles without checking them individually. Right now, it's easy to keep track of, but once the site gets busy again, updates would only remain up for minutes not hours... So that's something to consider too. But probably not enough to overshadow what little privacy ppl have on their profiles. Maybe if ppl could chose whether to allow their profile updates to be public or not. That might work.
Yes, ppl CAN choose to not have their status update. So that does make a difference! Still some ppl won't change the setting and might not realize their words will end up on the front page... So what to do, what to do...? If you don't like seeing your status update, definitely change the setting!
If it would be helpful to the mods perhaps you could keep that feature but have it only visible to them not to all of us?
the homepage module where they are displayed should have a collapse option so we can choose to see them or not
sure. i guess. can't say as i'd really noticed yet. if the update hadn't required me to re-log-in, i probably wouldn't have noticed there was a front page. btw, i DO like what appears to be the new format. and thanks very much for now letting us all, use our own avatars, without having to become a monetary contributor to do so. previously this had been the only site i was on that i had been unable to.
