Pressed ever seen the movie The East? I think you would like it. I think its awesome. Give the pharmaceutical companies a taste of their own medicine.
While controlling cholesterol through diet is ideal there are those people who are at high risk in the meantime that the medication could help. There are times that risk is a larger factor than taking medications are. Ideally lowering through diet and exercise is the way to go but if the medications allow a person the time to also work on those things without risk, it is a benefit.
Cholesterol doesn't even cause heart disease... inflammation does. Cholesterol is important and healthy, and your brain needs it to function, but when a person has abnormally high cholesterol levels, it's usually because they eat a lot of sugar and refined carbs, are overweight, or are borderline insulin resistant. Excess sugar in the blood affects the liver, which becomes fatty, so then that fat goes into the bloodstream. The fact is that dietary cholesterol from things like eggs, meat and dairy accounts for very little of the cholesterol in the blood, which comes mostly from the liver. Statin drugs are proven to cause muscle weakness, cognitive impairment, and all sorts of other problems, and they don't even prevent heart disease as they're claimed to do. They actually rob the heart of important nutrients like coenzyme Q10.
Data about how many Americans are taking statins. http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/...-are-americans-hearts-benefiting-201104151518 "Combine the 45+ age groups and both genders, and it comes out that one in four Americans, ages 45 and older, are taking a statin. There are roughly 127 million Americans over age 45. Presuming that there hasn’t been a big drop off in use since 2005-2008 (the latest period for the government health survey upon which these statistics are based) almost 32 million Americans take a statin. That’s the equivalent of the entire populations of Florida and Illinois combined."
The modern western diet has been high in starch, refined grains, refined sugar, and foods flavored with processed fats and salt. Couple that with a lack of regular physical activity and behaviors such as smoking, and it's a recipe for cardiovascular problems. The following article is someone's explanation for the cause of inflammation. It's not the only explanation. http://heidilore.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/inflammation-example-one-way-comfort-food-poisons/ I've read in another article that the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fats in the contemporary diet of Americans is about 12. Decades ago before processed foods became the norm, the ratio was probably closer to 2.
