What do you think about Tolkien's books? So much fantasy books are inspired on his that most elements in his books will now appear as cliché, although at the time of release it wasn't.

    I really like the Hobbit.

Hated the Fellowship of the Ring. Thought it was among the worst five books I'd ever read.

Because of cliché's or the boring and on going descriptions of landscapes and such? My take is the latter  Do you like to read series generally? Lots of fantasy authors seem to find it hard to fit their fantasy setting and story in one book :p

I'm the same. I really liked The Hobbit, but couldn't get into the rest of the series.

Kind of like The Wheel of Time - the first book was incredible, second and third were decent, but after that the series just got too boring and repetitive. Until Sanderson took it over and it got awesome again :)

I have never finished the wheel of time

I do like some other trilogies and lengthy series. When I read the Lord of the rings the first time it was quite a struggle in the lengthy and more boring parts but as there weren't any movies of it yet and I loved the setting and story so far, I never had a real problem finishing it. In fact I moved on straight to the Silmarillion afterwards.

The going on and on is a big part; but I just find nothing about the book interesting.

None of the characters have any charm to them. All the whimsy has been taken out of Bilbo; Gandalf is kind of just an old dick. Tom Bombadil is the strangest and most annoying nature entity I've ever heard of.

And nothing in the book has any significance outside of itself. It's so self-referential, that I can't understand why anyone does find it interesting. (I hear the series has some anti-industry themes to it; but there sure wasn't any strong or interesting subtext going on in that first one.)

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. If you don't like that, then you probably won't like any fantasy.

I mainly have series or trilogies to recommend where it comes to the fantasy genre :p I think Duck might love the Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. I definately dare to recommend it to you, eggs!

Freedom of speech goes too far the second it protects someone's right to deliberately undermine science or reason.

Too many people aren't clever, informed or especially patient enough to understand that conspiracy theorists are selling them indignation and outrage as opposed to 'waking them up', or to follow the paper trails that would completely expose their so-called 'experts' as frauds.

I read the first 10ish pages of it on Amazon; seems pretty decent. A lot lighter than the stuff I usually read, but that's not necessarily a bad thing; maybe I'll come back to it someday.

Damn, that is a nice feature Amazon has :) Even nicer that you used it  Yeah it reads pretty light and easy but it has some good and deep themes and also important: intriguing characters and story and all those things are built up great. The setting is important for me too, if I can't identify with it or do not find it plausible or appealing at all, well yeah than the story has to be REALLY good :p

I agree with above part! But not sure about this statement myself:

    1) I think abortion is good, this seems to be a very popular opinion in this forum actually.
2)Physician assisted suicide is good. How many people in a fucking nursing home actually want to live anyway? Do YOU want to be alive when your stuck in a shitty home, cant support yourself, live off food that is chosen FOR you everyday. Most of your family members are either dead, or too young and full of life to spend much more than a half hour to and hour with you once a week if your lucky.... so dont count on children or grandchildren to save you from that misery, if its gonna happen its gonna happen wether or not you had children. So because the world is already overpopulated, your better off just getting yourself sterilized so you can enjoy sex without the misery of raising a child.
    3) If I could cure mental retardation, down's syndrome, autism, or any other kind of shitty life long genetic disease before a cell becomes a fetus and then is born, I will most DEFINITELY do it... Provided im looking to have the child actually be born in the first place. Fuck "god's will", or "nature" or any other spiritual BS telling me to let things go the way they were meant to be.
    4) Why is it that conservatives are so anti-abortion, yet at the same time they are against all the socialism that many of these babies have to depend on to survive anyway. If you look at it a certain way, a true hardcore conservative could benefit greatly by aborting fetuses. No more having to support the excess population with your hard earned tax dollars.
    5) Prohibition from the 1930's never did end, it just legalized one substance, and then switched its focus to all the other substances that someone else didnt like. Not only that, it prohibited the use of one VERY useful substance that is completely harmless, and getting high off it is just the tip of the iceburg... Nothing has broke my country at the bank more than this fucked up war on drugs. Not just mine, where would the mexican economy be today if they could produce oil, plastics, clothing all from one crop? I can only imagine....
    6) Fighting for the recreational use of marijuana is silly! Why the fuck would I smoke that shit when I can heat/insulate my home with it and make clothes out of it. One of the big obstacles in the legalization of marijuana is that you got a bunch of total pot heads, who try to act like intellectuals who only care about smoking weed, and talking shit about the opposite extreme who want to ban any use of the substance period. Fuck the DEA... And fuck you guys too for being easy targets for them assholes.
    7) Why are people always trying to save my soul with their religion? Its like im having each arm and leg tied to a horse and each going in opposite directions. One guy says hes this, another says hes that and that if I listen to them, and join their group im saved. They both pray to the same god but in a different way... i mean, what the fuck? Neither has any more proof than the other. Then you got these completely pushover peace loving religions that tell you its ok to be bad now, because in the next life your going to become something else and eventually you will be pure and cease to exist. If thats the case ill try to be a little impure in each life so that ill live forever. Fuck going non-existant. Life tastes to damn good.

Gee im all ranted out. what do yall think?

I read it last summer actually! I liked the first book a lot but was kind of bored by the third one. Decent series though, and worth reading.

It continues in another trilogy as well. It has living ships in it, which didn't sound interesting to me at all but it is a fantastic continuation of the Farseer trilogy. And those dubious fantasy aspects (like living ships) all make sense in the end in a superb way. It also connects greatly to the story of the farseers. Heavily recommended I say!
