Thanks for showing spoiled children everywhere your fine example of maturity. We are all greatly humbled and in your debt. But while you're being so mature and considerate, apply a spoiler warning next time.

  3. Hey, I'm not the one who started being a dick. You could have not pretended like it was a big deal and tried to bring it all down to a level of "you bad, me good" but you chose not to.

Am I the only one who sucks it up like a man when someone does something completely trivial that really has no effect on me instead of trying to out the individual as a terrible person?

It wasn't the story they always wanted to tell, though. Johnson broke with the general direction Abrams was going in. Much of TFA was reshot halfway through. All of the scripts have been changed time and time again, that's just a part of the filmmaking process. It's possible to make subtle changes to a script that have a huge impact on the film, too. I see no reason to believe they won't be altering Episode IX in response to the negative fan reaction.

That's true, but that's not a good thing.

Fair enough, we can agree to disagree here.

The Last Jedi is often praised for being bold and creative, but while I did feel there were some genuinely good twists, a lot of its supposed "imaginativeness" wasn't based on any new ideas at all, just reversing what came before.

Rey's parents being nobodies is a great example. I actually approved of Johnson's decision to reveal this; I cringed waiting for the moment when they would tell us she was Luke's daughter, or Ben Solo's sister. Had they gone down that path, it would have made the Star Wars universe even smaller and fuller of coincidences than it already is.

But that isn't creativity, it's just...reversing something that was already set up. As many fans have pointed out, it also creates additional problems. Where did Rey get her force powers? She learned even faster than Anakin and Luke did. Maybe they will answer this question in IX...but Johnson sure didn't bother to. He didn't seem to give any thought to the obvious questions this raises.

The new characters aren't that interesting, either. DJ is a great example. He tells Finn and Rose: "Don't let the wrapper fool you". But at the end of the movie, we learn he was a selfish traitor just like we expected him to be. Cliche and predictable.

Then there are the wasted opportunities. Take the Holdo subplot, for instance. It's the film's weakest point by far (why doesn't she tell Poe her plan, even after a gun is pointed at her head and Poe's vocal reaction to the computer display would have alerted any spies aboard the ship to the existence of the transports?). Just a few subtle tweaks to her character could have turned that section of the film into a commentary on the tragic consequences of mistrust. Her fear of letting others know about the plan, lest the resistance be destroyed, would end up being the very thing that indirectly destroyed the resistance. But we are meant to approve of her actions, so any potential sense of tragedy is destroyed.

But look at what the Sequel Trilogy is, as a whole. Things were set up in VII, and reversed in VIII. Things are left unexplained, or at least under-explained. The plot is progressing in the sense that things keep happening, but in terms of its overall vision, purpose, sense of direction...it's a mess.

Why is there a First Order to begin with? Why was the New Republic such a failure? Why did Luke turn his back on the Jedi instead of just feeling like a failure personally? (There is no clear reason given as to why the Jedi had to "end".)

Most importantly of all...what makes this trilogy more than just a repeat of the OT?

We are two films in...and none of these questions are answered, or even set up for really well. You'd think that the literal re-mergence of the empire would provoke more despair over the endless cycle of darkness rising in the galaxy. This should have been the main theme of the Sequel Trilogy, and is the main thing that I think would justify its existence. It would help assure us that some grand, overarching story was being told over the course of these 9 movies. Otherwise, nothing holds the series together.

I'll grant you one thing though, I think it's possible to fix most of these problems (though sadly, not all - they can't go back and explain away Holdo's decisions at this point for instance). But they would need to go back in and address things that were left unexplained in Episode VIII, and so re-enter some very controversial territory. I'm not hopeful. But I really hope I'm wrong.

Yes, your masculinity is on full display and duly noted. It is as enlightening as your advanced maturity.

Its a simple matter of consideration. If bringing it to your attention makes me a dick, so be it. Keep it in mind or don't.

  6. You're seriously just being a dick. I'm fine. But you...you are being a dick. That's your problem.

For me, the entire "no spoilers" thing is a recent meme and a myth. I could care less about spoilers. They have no effect on whether I enjoy a movie. And I get excited about movies and want to talk about them right away. I don't want to wait, pandering to spoiled babies who think they're Santa's Little Treasures who have to see the movie "with no spoilers! tee hee hee!"

What's much worse for me is fan theories. I almost didn't watch The Last Jedi due to that asinine theory that Snokes was Anakin.

Plus, some people actually like spoilers. It isn't all black and white, a matter of who is and isn't being considerate. I find fan theories inconsiderate, and I don't bitch about it.

You and your ilk really aren't the arbiters of consideration that you might wish you were. In fact, this whole argument is very inconsiderate and your fault.

Maybe it isn't all that creative, you may have a good point there. I think its play on the OT is clever though, particularly as a signal of a potential return to form after the prequels.

    Mkay.

  9. And talk about consideration... All movie trailers ARE is gigantic spoilers. I pretty much know the whole plot to Solo now. I knew there would be a dude in The Force Awakens with a wicked lightsaber. Would I prefer to go to the movies and be surprised in the theater by these things? Yes. They would make the movie 1000X more exciting.

But some people like the trailers. Fan theorists. They want to devour the thing whole and regurgitate it out, spewing a bunch of bogus nonsense about what they saw. Self-indulgent tripe. And I'm inconsiderate? Complain to Hollywood and the fan theorists.

I kind of think people SHOULD know about Infinity War, because it has some heavy issues in it. If you take your kiddos thinking you're not going to have to explain some heavy life and death shit afterwards, many of you will be mistaken.

Well you definitely took the time to collect your thoughts. I'm typically too lazy to do that much footwork. Well spoken.

    Jesus H. Ever loving Christ.
Neighborly consideration really ain't that much to ask man. You're on a mass media social network everyone's your neighbor. Don't get me wrong, I could give a damn less about Infinity War or spoilers for it myself, but that's cause I'm never gonna bother seeing it.

Yes I just sounded like Mr. Rogers

Stop being inconsiderate and childish. Jeeze, such a dick. This is all your fault.

Think I triggered a narcissistic rage with the poor thing. That right there is worth the price of admission.

  13. I wasn't being inconsiderate. If you want to have this discussion with me, let's have it. Otherwise shut the fuck up.

    1. You are the ones who are inconsiderate for even instigating this with me. Now it is blown way out of proportion as anyone with a bit of consideration and foresight would have been able to see that it would be, as it was carried out in a totally rude fashion. ("No spoilers!" would have sufficed and I would have subsequently apologized.)

    2. MOVIE TRAILERS ARE SPOILERS.

    3. I don't MIND spoilers. In fact, I LIKE them. I assume others are like me.

    4. STOP BITCHING ABOUT PETTY LITTLE INSIGNIFICANT THINGS YOU INCONSIDERATE IMMATURE FUCKS.

I take it back. Please spoil every movie because this conversation has been worth its weight in gold. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

  16. I'm glad you found it funny. I was just about to say, "Before you all go getting even more mad at me," but it got laughs I was going for.

  17. I am partly serious, though. Movie trailers do spoil movies. They give away entire plots...incredible sequences, etc.

Then you make up your own shit in the interim about what's going on in the trailer and what will actually be gets kind of ruined IMO.

Don't front. Everyone knows you were pissed off and dead serious. It's way too late for you to save face now. You'll just look more foolish if you keep going... But that's fine because it'll just keep getting funnier.

You obviously feel as though you did nothing wrong. Since you can't see how simple restraint & consideration, thinking before you speak if you will, are good qualities best just leave it at that.

Also I never said McFuddles was not even a smidge in the wrong, I only agreed that his initial observation was understandable. You both want to be assholes be my guest.
