Ok well, Kylo Ren got hit with artillery before they fought, so lets not gloss over that in our rush to shit on Rey.

I was more so pissed that she beat Luke so handily but even with his injury I feel as though Rey bested Ren way too easily for having never used a saber before. All they needed do was give her some sort of saber training. Even just a few basic moves. Or better yet actually bothered to have Luke in the film & have her meet him before going to the Death Star & facing baby Vader.

Easily? It was like a ten minute fight.

3:12 and while she was on her back foot for the vast majority of that fight once she "felt the force" she won quite handily.

Fair enough on the time. As long as you realize that your 'feeling' the fight should've gone differently isn't an objective reality that it actually should've :p

I am not the type of person to reply to 20 points in one post. If you want a conversation ask a question I will answer and either ask a question or only answer. But answering 20 questions at a time...aint nobody got time for that.
As for the first point you made. You are wrong it IS your opinion because maybe those characters in a galaxy far away have exceptionalately overt failings.

I don't even disagree with a lot of beatings points about TFA. There are definitely plenty of things to quibble with about the film... I just don't think the battle between Ren and Rey is one of them.

I do agree the storytelling in the film left much to be desired.

I think I am perfectly justified feeling nervous about Episode IX. Abrams made a pretty generic, predictable film with The Force Awakens. We also know that TLJ was unpopular for "taking too many risks". There's little doubt in my mind that he will try to pick up the pieces, defaulting to a safe, predictable conclusion, and that the higher ups will approve of this.

I don't think this means I am dismissing the Last Jedi. What does any of this have to do with the Last Jedi? I didn't like that film, but not because it did not answer these questions. I didn't like it because it was riddled with plot holes, pacing problems, and frustrating failures of imagination.

    How so?

I read an explanation on a fan forum that Rey actually 'downloaded' a lot of her abilities from Kylo when he reached into her mind and she turned it back on him in VII. This isn't just a fan theory-- it's the official explanation... but it wasn't included in the script. She was already mostly adept at fighting with her staff and it's not like she was in poor shape, so a lightsaber really isn't such a massive stretch. I really think they could have made this clearer in the film, though... but it wouldn't be easy to show.

I don't have a problem with Rey as a character, but I really think that her prodigious abilities need to find a story that compliments them... and I think she needs to have a rock bottom moment where we see her really suffer in the same way Luke did in the originals.

She was obviously wrong when she thought that she could help Kylo turn in TLJ, but the true consequences of that error (essentially helping Kylo become the new supreme leader) have yet to be seen. We also don't know what Snoke would have done differently, so even if Kylo becomes a brutal tyrant, we won't know if Snoke would have been so different. BUT the main problem is that there were no personal consequences-- she didn't lose anyone, she wasn't wounded or injured in any way by her mistake. She had to confront the truth about her parents, but that's it... it's not really enough.

We are talking about damage control here, not transforming the prequels into great films. All the retconning in the world could not change Christensen's terrible performance. ;)

I didn't say anything about whether or not you were justified, but you are being really cynical here. JJ was already working on the script when VIII was released... I am fairly certain that most of the plot points were already approved. I don't think they're going to do a complete 180 because TLJ only made 1.33 billion dollars. I think they will remain faithful to the story they always wanted to tell.

Plot holes are par for the course with this series. Pacing problems... well, it depends on how you like your pacing to be. I've heard people say that John Boorman's Excalibur had pacing issues, but the pacing was actually my favorite part of the whole film. I'm not going to say that TLJ isn't different from the other movies, but that's what I like about it. As for 'failures of imagination'-- that's just not even an issue at all, and I have no idea how anyone could say that.

The heroes are at their lowest point, the resistance is essentially over, Kylo is in command, their fleet is gone.
There's plenty of room to tell a great comeback story.

One reason why I am so fond of the Q2 fan-edits is, they make the prequels conform to the original trilogy.

While I must concede that point to you I would like to back up such feeling by pointing out that no other saber duel in the franchise ended so quickly or decisively, with the exception of Old Ben vs Vader & we all know why that was as quick as it was.
Umm ok great but I wasn't referring to any failings of the characters, in fact one of my greatest issues with the new films is that they are chalk full of perfect characters. I was referring to the failings of the movies in general.

And yet we are all here talking about it, 15 pages of it thus far

We are not filling up 15 pages on the Marvel Movies, Transformers or any of the many other big franchises this decade

And its similar elsewhere on the web, nothing really gets more nerds talking than Star Wars

I loved TFA and TLJ, especially all the bits with Rey and Ren, I hope ep 9 is mostly about them

  16. God the higher ups suck. I LOVE the risks. That's what I live for in movies. Infinity War was awesome, with half the good guys dying in the end. I thought it was great that Snokes got offed. If the executives had their way every movie would be the exact same movie so long as it made a billion dollars.

I think its pretty cool you just put a huge random spoiler about a film still in theaters that some of us haven't seen yet. Thanks for that.

  18. I always do stuff like that. I know better than to think it ruins anything. But you should be warned...it really isn't exactly for children. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the kids left crying. They don't know about how there's always a sequel to make things better. Me, spoilers don't bother me and I don't pretend they do. A good movie is a good movie. If a spoiler can ruin it it wasn't that great to begin with. If you might as well have seen the film because I said something, well... Infinity War is really good, though. But Ant Man...oh wait, I won't give any more spoilers.

Well as long as it doesn't bother you everything is fine, common decency be damned. Glad we understand each other.
