Spitting on Vietnam Soldiers

I'm talking about neither, I was just proposing a plausible scenario; thus the "if"

Yes, but then you are just using false logic. Just because it's OK to fight a nation that's attacking you, it should be fine to attack an innocent nation? See, nobody is saying anything about Russian soldiers fighting against the Nazis, or even about Israel fighting nations that are directly responsible for terrorism against it. We are talking about attacking nations that never did anything wrong to you.

 

ok, soldiers did do terrible things in vietnam, no argument there. but how did any of those hippies know the man they were actually spitting on commited them? there were corpman and medics that did nothing but patch people back together that got spat on. and they were drafted. yes they fixed killing machines but its not like they wanted to be there. would you let a man die in front of you simply because he carried a gun?

 

I've demonstrated many times against the Iraq war, but I would draw the line at direct action against individual soldiers. No matter how strongly I feel that they have participated in an illegal, immoral action, and that "following orders" is no excuse. You might disagree with the treatment of animals for scientific testing - it doesn't make it right to deface the property of scientists. You might be against abortion - it doesn't make it right to threaten doctors. Protest vociferously and make your voice heard, but it's important to avoid letting emotion get the better of you. You only undermine your case. Hate what they have done, don't hate the person.

 

The same can be said for war atrocities.

In no way should The U.S. army be compared to Nazis, No way.

If Canadians are taught that in school, well, its too bad.

If anything the Iraq war is over idealistic. The US Military does
not go to kill civilians.

 

Propoganda set by the United States contradicts what the United States did to the Nazi prisoners.

Regarding this book claiming that Vets being spat on is a myth - what bullshit.

I found this in the "Letters" pages in the (Sydney, Australia) Daily Telegraph newspaper just yesterday:

"In your History article (Daily Telegraph, April 29), the following statement was made: 'Many surviving veterans felt resentful that they were treated badly when they returned'.

I was one of those veterans who was treated abominably, being spat upon and jeered at - just to mention, but a couple of incidents - whether in or out of uniform (my short hair defined me as a serviceman).

These actions were encouraged by some politicians to suit their own ambitions.

As a result of my service in Vietnam and amplified by my treatment on return, I am afflicted by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which has profoundly affected my life.

I am far from alone in continuing to suffer from this disorder. I feel the quoted statement belittles me and my fellow veterans.

So we have Vietnam veterans from AROUND THE WORLD engaging in some sort of urban myth game are we. How ridiculous.

 

When My Dad enlisted in 1944,after boot, he guarded German soldiers who were captives. It was in Lousiana, the Germans worked harvesting sugar cane.

My Dad told me that they were members of The Afrika Korps, captured in Lybia.
He said that they were strong & healthy. When the war ended and it came time to ship them home to Europe, Dad went too. The Germans believed they were being repatraited as part of an armistice or peace settlement. They dismissed newspaper accounts of Allied victory as propaganda.

The transport ship landed in France, from there they went by closed box car, Dad was riding too. When the train arrived in the Rhineland, the box car doors were opened; only then did The Afrika Korps. realize that all had been lost.
Dad stayed two years in Barvaria and went back to visit upon his retirement from work. He spoke with positives in describing the prisinors and civilians he guarded during those years.

If he was involved in torture, would he have gone back?

 

luckily were i grew up we had respect for vetrans not all my neibors made it home alive but those that did were treated with respect and mine to you homebudz!!! there are posters here that will probably never be in a life or death situation let alone a war for them to say what they would do is ignorance that is all! and to that little girl who dosent think pepole kill eachother over were to put the fence or water or food or woman not all wars are fought for greed some are fought for simple survival. how massive does it have to be before you call it war? is your cosin that you never met worthy of defending? when you cant defend your self would you ask or scream for help?

 

ok.. this thread goes fast, so with the risk of going offtopic just a small note: Mui, if you would have watched the documentary you would've seen that the young males DO invade neighbouring territory and almost ritually killing monkeys they encounter (for example, they rip out the genitalia). Before going on such a killing, they gather in a group, go silent for a while and then they march of in a single line. Also, they have the exact same view on the odds of winning a fight as is used in hand to hand combat (not starting a fight unless you outnumber them 3 to 1 or sth like that). You say there isn't such a thing as large scale monkey wars. Well, that might be because there aren't any x million monkeys living in one area. But the monkey groups that do exist do have wars. Another example would be big american cities, with ghetto wars. Each youthgroup has it's own territory and they will defend theirs, as well as invade that of others to expand their own turf.

In my opinion (and again, watch that documentary if you have the chance) as soon as you put large groups of the same species together, they will start fighting over territory. The more 'intelligent' the species is, the more ritual and planned these fights are. Monkey warfare is very, very close to our way of warfare.. only difference is now that we hardly use hand to hand combat anymore, which makes it less personal. But trust me.. if monkeys knew how to operate a gun, trust me.. it will.

 

The huge mistake IMO with the viet nam war was our government getting involved in an insanity that started way before we got there. I did protest against the governments involvement in the war but had respect for the men that went over there and did what they had to do. Yes, there were alot of assholes that treated the men that came back like shit including being spat upon. It was a different time and a much different war. What I have noticed in this thread is the seemingly lack of knowledge about what actually went on over there by the young people that have posted. I guess if you don't read past a few paragraphs written, you come up with all of this stuff about cilivians killed not how the vietnamese fought in that war, the despicable things that went on and yes bad things happened on both sides. Most men were drafted or about it be and rather than being drafted shortly, picked the armed service to be in. I'm just appalled at the apparent ignorance of our history by some of the younger folks. I have the utmost respect for the vets that had to fight in that war. What I don't get is the fact that young men signed up in droves to fight in Iraq.

As far as this stupid monkey thing, they are equally as vicious as their limited intelligence and ability to organize and wtf does that have to do with anything anyways. Lets start comparing reptiles to mammals next....*rolls eyes*

Oh yeah, one more thing...on the "if everyone would do it" arguement. Why hasn't that same thing been done about legalizing pot then? Reality check for real!! Try getting a job, or so many other things after yah done some jail time.

 

The monkey analogy is pointless. We have a higher intelligence. We have the ability to send spacecraft outside of the fucking solar system! Even our crudest inventions such as the spoon or fork are far more advanced than anything that any other animal on this earth is capable of creating. We have the ability to think LOGICALLY. Which means that we can predict the the effect that the decisions we make might have. That is what seperates us from monkeys. We know the effects of war. We've been doing it for thousands of years. It's all about $$$, power, greed. It is people like you who continue to make excuses for going to war that ensure this world will continue to be a horrible place to live for future generations.

True.. but imho we need to evolve way more before we are to that point..

The comparisson with monkeys was to point out that it's hidden deep within our evolutionary system to fight wars over territory and power. We might have evolved from there.. but the current day situation, as well as history, only proves that we have used our intelligence to fight more advanced wars with bombs and whatnot. Most of our latest inventions are based on warfare.. think of the internet.. think that was invented by some nice people who wanted to make friends all over the world? The first networksystem thingie was set up to be able to communicate with other politicians in times of a nuclear war. Warfare and the risk of war has brought our technology where it is today.. without our intelligence we just would be throwing rocks and sticks at eachother untill we evolve further.

Think of the childsoldiers in West Africa.. they were captured by the rebels and forced to fight.

You might say 'the are only children'.. true.. but what if your government has told you over and over and over since you were born that they know what's right (propaganda!) and that a country you are befriended with is in serious problems and your goverment has decided you are going to help your friends at the other side of the world to fight back the evil enemy? If a friend of yours was in trouble.. wouldn't you fight for them if talking didn't help anymore?

Verrrrry easy to just blame it on the veterans..

 

a 19 year old american is not a slave child soldier ......obviously governments and wepons manufacturers are tryin to fool peeps bout whats goin on ....but americans have all the rescorces they need to inform themselves , and make the rite decision .....30 0r more yrs ago there were people who would neither serve or work in the many weopons factories to avoid serving as wekk as 55 yrs ago ... they were more than spat on ,countless lives ruined by acts of true concience ....u are the ultimatly culpable for your particpation in the world death machiene
