eat them with doughnuts? lol. them i leave be. but they tell me their prey is there. and their prey i usually don't want colonizing the house. amonia cleaners take care of the ant highways. and when ants and other guys aren't comming in, the spiders go back out where they are. you can tease spiders to make it rain though. there's a reason this works, though it exactly actually because of teasing them. but anyway, spiders are cool generally. another folk medicine thing that i don't know if its actually supposed to work, is if you ever do get stung by one, drink lots of milk. well its always worked for me, but then i don't think i've ever been stung by the hour glass, though i've seen plenty of them. i generally don't kill anything. (other then some kinds of microbes inside myself). sanitation instead discourages most coloizations of their prey.

There are 1 million spiders per acre of land on Earth, and 3 million per acre in the tropics –why would anyone short of having a pet spider try to save even 1 with over 800 quadrillion [IMG]

The black widow spiders (here) in the Twilight Zone surely come inside. :yikes: and I kill them just as quickly as I can!

Same thing with brown recluses. I still can't get my head to decide exactly what the brown recluse looks like - in spite of doing LOTS of google image searches. Rather, it seems that any number of spiders I find look like that, and I kill them as quickly and efficiently as I can!!!

I let Grand Daddy Long Legs live though. They get a free pass. :)

I actually recently looked into keeping a tarantula in captivity in my home. I thought it would make a pretty cool "pet".

creepy is in one's own mind. i totally don't get why in the hell anyone would ever kill a spider.
if humans are supposed to be so intelligent, well i guess i'm dumb too, because i sure don't get it.

I don't either, Themnax, but I don';t get why anyone likes to kill anything, either.....Many people just like to kill things....I guess.

i noticed tonight outside....mosquitoes were landing on me right and left, and i was not killing them, I was brushing them away.....with a swoop of my hand....instead of smacking them down on me...so i guess i don't really kill them, either.

well flying insects that cause itching skin irritations aren't something i would miss if they didn't exist,
even if it also meant that birds that pray on them might not exist either.
but spiders, i don't get why people even notice them, other then to knock down their webs in the living room.
and consider their presence as an indicator that their pray might be present or attempting to colonize.

people who have an obsession with killing things, just to BE killing things, i think have some kind of mental problem,
that may not be a direct threat to other humans immediately, but may be a kind of early warning that such a threat may exist.

That is the thing - I don't knock down the webs, I leave them and let the spiders live. I'd only remove a spider from my home if it was a big bad spider that would cause a reaction if it bit me.

When we had a problem with cockroaches, though, I killed those nasty buggers. I also kill silver fish with reckless fucking abandon, and I don't feel bad about it at all.

Exactly it’s called breaking and entering and you have a right to protect your family and property.

Even if there was no intent in the mind of the spider, it’s still illegal trespass, a misdemeanor.

You’re covered either way, so go ahead and tread on Charlotte’s Web

i'm something like that too. i don't LIKE killing anything, and there ARE usually, mostly, other ways to prevent ants and roaches from colonizing human living spaces.

but roaches bother me because they like to colonize the insides of electronics enclosures, or of course any enclosure they can get into and hide in and that means pretty much anything.
and that means you end up taking them with you because their eggs are inside of things that are of value that you don't want to leave behind,
which means the only way to not take them with you is to take everything apart to thoroughly sanitize the inside of it, which is a major pain in the ass.

silverfish i can't say as i've seen them inside a house, other then around woodwork that is rotting from being exposed to and not protected from sources of moisture.
of course i've seen them outside in the garden all the time, where they belong just fine, in the foothills in california and in oregon.

i've never really seen or had them as a colonization problem like with ants or roaches. with ants, amonia based cleaners mess up their scent highways and catching and ejecting their flying queen ants before them can lay there eggs, pretty much takes care of them. i don't like traps because they work by attracting them, which is really kind of almost self defeating, and sprays, you just don't want to seal yourself up inside with them. they work ok if you use them when you're ready to leave the house for a while, then seal up everything and stay away for several hours to let them work and then aire everything out when you get back.

they make them (aerosol bug sprays, especially professional ones) now to where you don't smell them, but i'm not convinced that makes them safe be in the house with at the same time. i've known of people to die from shutting themselves up in the house with bug sprays. some of them people i've known myself. there's also some question as to just how effective they are against their intended targets. i've seen professional bug sprayers lately not wearing breathing protection, but i'm pretty sure i'd want to wear at least a dust mask.

that's what i do when they come around, and then leave for most of the day after, and then air the place out when i get back.

also all the insecticides in the world won't do a bit of good if you don't try to find ways to keep things clean enough to not attract them.
i'm not saying you won't ever see them if you do, but it does make a big difference and is a big help in getting rid of them.

making excuses is also called making excuses. being covered isn't exactly the point. spiders aren't breaking anything and they aren't a threat to anything.
if anything they're protecting you from things that are.
so none of that is really an answer to why want to get rid of them at all.

Black widow spiders CAN KILL you! Brown recluse spiders can cause permanent physical impairment and have been known to cause death!!! But don't just take my word for it - look it up, check it out. Where I live both of these spiders are common.

Can you not see where both of these spiders are yes indeedy a threat?

Yes I know they consume hundreds of insects a year but to suggest they don’t pose a threat is quite inaccurate.

In fact one researcher has suggested they may be responsible for causing hundreds of heart attacks a year in persons with pre-existing conditions.

they're not common, not often in the house, and only a threat if you accidentally step on them in your bare feet. yes they can kill you, maybe, and yes you don't want to be around them or them around you, but you're more likely to get bitten by them trying to kill them then by leaving them alone. of course sure, you don't want these in your house, but that's apples and oranges, they're also not web spinners, so 99 times out of a hundred they're not the spiders in your house either. you're more likely to find them out in seldom used storage sheds then in your house.

and yes, if you have pre-existing conditions, you really need to not be messing with them at all. the odds of being bitten if you're not messing with them, are pretty close to nil.
