god only knows and imagine (john lennon's version only) have been known to make me teary eyed on strange occassions.
"Purple Rain" - Prince "Name"- Goo Goo Dolls "Breaking the Girl" Red Hot Chili Peppers "ShadowBoxer" - Fiona Apple
OMG the saddest two songs I know of are both on Tigerlily by Natalie Merchant. The first is "River," about River Phoenix's death. Now, I'm not super-sympathetic about people who die of their own doing, i.e. drug overdose, but the song is really a tearjerker. The other song is "My Beloved Wife," which she sings from the voice of a man whose wife has died after a long illness. He says some things like, "My love is gone, would it be wrong, if I should...just turn my face away from the light... go with her tonight..." It's an incredibly pain-stricken song. Oh, and then there are two Jewel songs that come to mind that also make me wanna cry. One is "Adrian." It's about a boy who has "an unfortunate accident in a canoe"... He ends up with debilitating brain damage, but "little Mary Epperson," who "liked him," kept visiting him as he grew up, because she had compassion and love for him (and holy shit it's making my eyes water-up even now just writing about it!). The other is "Painters." It's about a husband and wife who are painters, and they create their world of love through their painting... until one day the husband is out in the fields and she senses that something's wrong: "She went running through the orchard screaming 'No, God, don't take him from me' and by the time she got there she feared he already had gone She got to where he lay, water-colored roses in his hands for her... She threw them down screaming 'Damn you man, don't leave me with nothing left behind but these cold paintings these cold portraits to remind me...' He said, 'Love I only leave a little; try to understand. I put my soul in this life we've created with these four hands. Love I leave, but only a little; this world holds me still. My body may die now but -- these paintings are real..." OMG I am seriously welling-up now, just hearing that song in my head as I typed part of it for you. It's on her debut album "Pieces of You," in case you want to hear it. It's really beautiful. -Jeffrey
the dj on the radio I always listen 2 played "Wish You Were Here" followed by "Shine On..." & then I read all these! I am so gonna cry now
Yer gonna laugh, but I always get sentimental from Boy Meets Girl's "Waiting For A Star To Fall." It reminds me of my young silly days in high school when I had a crush on this girl I never even really got to meet. Oh, and from the same time period: Martika's "Toy Soldiers"... sad song. -Jeffrey
Oh, now that you mention those two: while I never really thought of them as "sad" songs, it reminds me of how when I was kinda going out with a girl in high school who I later really fell in love with, I was making out with her on the bed in my friend's bedroom, and while he had speakers in his room, the actual stereo was in the adjoining room...so he put on "Shine On..." from there and we made out to it. I still can imagine being in that room, to this day. And on the subject of that girlfriend... "Our song" was by Richard Marx: "Right Here Waiting." It took a lonnnng lonnnng time before I could keep from crying when I heard that song! :& -Jeffrey
Oh, GREAT... I went looking for my Jewel "Pieces of You" CD and it's not in its case and I have no idea where it is. My CD collection is a chaotic MESS right now... -Jeffrey
"Angie" makes me cry, too. First of all it's my name. Second my best bud used to sing it to me over the headsets we wore when we worked at Wendy's together. He died in a car crash almost a year ago. I can't even listen to it now.

From the, "Most depressing songs" post... And added to that list.... Maxwell - this woman's work Christmas music - especially, "Away in a manger" and, "Mary did you know" My ex fiance's father had a cd that held the most depressing music I have ever heard. I cannot remember the name of the band, but I do recall one of the songs being about a car crash on a country road in the middle of the night and the sound of screams.
