There are those windows of opportunity when someone is going through some difficult times that soften them, such as a death in the family or divorce. You converse with them and get to know the person very deeply for a short time. Later, they return to work or remarry and society forms a hard shell over them once again. The person you knew intimately for that brief period is never to be seen again.

When disaster strikes, humans tend to behave in one of three ways:
    1) softened hearts (like you mentioned)
    2) hardened/bitter hearts
    3) shielded hearts

When people are hurting, they may show you a different side of themselves, because they're vulnerable.
Treasure that moment you had with that person, but no one lives in that state of vulnerability, even among spouses it's rare.
Appreciate the fact that they showed you their heart and don't be offended that it's not always on their sleeve.
After all, what's the worth of a gift if it's given to everyone? :)

    Peace,
