I understand that was the topic of the thread, but the subject changed only a few posts in....and not by me (although I didn't help matters). I was only responding to what others were saying....asked a question, and then things spiraled out of control. But I wasn't complaint about people on welfare....I was complaining about people that DON'T NEED welfare, but abuse the system. Along with our governments lack of efficiency in differentiating the two. As for the expensive cars and what not.....I wasn't talking about law abiding citizens. I was talking about people who make good money and buy expensive toys that the government doesn't know about, while collecting aid. Now back to the OP I'm all for sharing. In fact I'm a very selfless person, and even when I'm down and out I'll give "the shirt off my back" to a friend that needs it. However I don't want to live in a place where I'm forced to give my earnings to people I don't know.
I understand completely what you mean, I just as completely disagree that the solution to our problems starts by stopping those on the lower end of the income scale from abusing the system is useful in anyway. You could stop every case of welfare (social services) fraud there is and we would still be in a screwed up world that was getting worse. If you stopped even just half the cases of fraud from the other end of the scale we would be well on our way to a better place, as they only way to do that is a systemic change of the system that would lead to the other half being fixed. You have people that are making literally millions and millions of dollars off the labor of others as well as breaking laws, who then commit fraud and other crimes to hide that money so they don't even give their 'share' of it back. How do you tell someone who is making 50k a year, that they have to help feed another family on top of their own, when there are people making 5 million a year who pay less? Simple answer is you don't, or at least not without encouraging even more fraud. People's basic needs should be taken care of in every society, before there are people getting 'rich'... you know why? Becuase it's the right thing to do. All these claims that if you did that, everyone would sit on their asses and do nothing is not only wrong, it is the opposite of the truth. If people's basic needs, shelter, utilities, food, communication and a clean environment were met, there would be those who would sit around and do nothing but live off the system... But the majority would still want things beyond the basic needs, and they would, as now, go out to work to get them... but they wouldn't have to put themselves in a position to accept abuses from employers in order to survive. Now, how do we convince those that are in the top income brackets to give more, when people in the lower income brackets are saying they shouldn't have to? If someone making 50k a year, doesn't think someone making 5 million a year should be paying more in taxes then they are, then why would the person making the 5 million? lol When the masses, thats you, me and everyone else who isn't in the top 5% income bracket, stands up and says, thats enough, this is wrong... then, we will start to have a sharing society... Until then, society is a pyramid scheme, and like all pyramid schemes, those at the bottom get crushed supporting those at the top.
