This really is so sad, but if he won't seek help then what can one do?
To live life with that kind of attitude and thoughts like that must be hell, and I don't envy him at all.

If it is at all possible, I wish him well though.

I have a cousin who has a mental illness. He lost both his parents and his oldest brother in the space of 12 years.
He gets a lot of help not because he doesn't want to he has to because the episodes he has are not that great.

313,104 divided by 365 and then by 15 was just mental arithmetic to me and took about 20 seconds.
It is simply the way that I think. In all engineering, a mental approximation is vital, particularly when people use calculators without clearing them, or slip decimal points.

Back in the 80's I was asked to check the angles of floor sag on a building under construction. I arrived to find that the first floor shuttering looked like a church dome and the stupid site engineer claimed that it would be level once the concrete had set. Rather than use the dead / live loading on the floor, he had used the weight of the entire 18 story building. He had ignored the fact that concrete does not bend, or that a storeroom floor would not need to support around 700 tons.

The newly qualified engineer had spent 4 years using computers and calculators and had no site experience whatsoever. If I had told him that the roof weighed 38kg rather than 38.000, he would probably have tapped it into his computer without batting an eyelid.
