Longstreet wanted a defensive battle if possible. That had worked well previously, and in that type of warfare he rightly saw that defenders had a big advantage over attackers. This really remained a fact of life in terms of military strategy until the invention of the tank, and more mobile forms of warfare. Probably Gettysburg was Lee's biggest mistake. Any kind of frontal assault was always going to be very risky to say the least. Probably though he did feel he had no choice once things had kicked off. The Anglican church is actually the state religion of Britain, with the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury at the head. It was widely spread by the Empire, so there are millions of Anglicans in Africa today for example. A conservative, but not ultra conservative organization. The Archbishop says he sometimes wonders if God exists. Gradually, women are getting more power - they've just voted to have women bishops. In Lee's day it was probably very different from now. In some ways 19th c. Anglicanism in Britain was similar to Catholicism - they had (and some still have) what is described as a 'high church' ethos. Quite ritualistic for protestantism really. I don't know, but my guess would be that in the south in Lee's time it would have been more for the well to do, and maybe those who felt their culture went back to roots in the old country.
Lee had his reasons. The war kept dragging on, the human cost continued to accumulate, and time seemed to be on the side of the North. Northern voters seemed to be content to let things drag on, as long as all the damage was being done elsewhere. The South was slowly running out of everything, especially west of the mountains. Nothing could come up the Mississippi River. Also, Lee had a strong feeling that he wouldn't be alive much longer, and he didn't see a suitable replacement for himself. Only Longstreet seemed to have the skills needed to manage an army of 70,000 men, and he lacked the charisma and raw aggression that Lee thought necessary for victory. Jackson was dead, and Stuart lacked the maturity, wisdom, and infantry experience to rise to the next level. Other generals at times seemed barely able to handle their current responsibilities. Pickett's Charge might have had a different outcome if the artillery had been more effective. It was so massive that smoke from the cannons reduced the visibility to near zero, so they didn't notice that the cannon trailer hitches had sunk into the ground so much that they were shooting over the heads of Hancock's men. Considerable credit also goes to Hancock's leadership. The war might have ended the next week if Meade had pursued Lee and pinned him against the banks of the Potomac River. Lincoln never forgave Meade for that failure. Still calling itself a Church of England branch at that time, it may have been quite a bit more fundamentalist than typical churches in and around London. I see this today with Methodists and Baptists. Their teachings in city churches and rural churches can be amazingly different, bending to fit the local culture. Tracking down some of those details gives me a good assignment for my next trip to northern Virginia. Last time, I was further west, around Stonewall's turf, Winchester. Meanwhile, the current wave of political correctness continues deeper into absurdity. The National Park Service has now declared that except for a few special circumstances, Confederate flags will no longer be flown at the historical battlefields that they maintain. Erasing history has become a national passion, for now. This is all coming from fanatical white liberals, not from black leaders. A backlash is likely. Too much change, too fast. (ed.: spelling)
On the race coverage tonight, I haven't seen or heard anything about the flag controversy. I didn't think the big corporate sponsors would want it mentioned.
The Confederate flag to me is a symbol of southern pride. MY flag is NOT racist. To me, it's how the person uses the flag and what it means to them, no one else. If someone wants to use it as a symbol of racism then their flag IS racist.
What does that say about the (same) flag you're waving though? Well, I guess that question is basically what this whole thread is about But I am inclined to agree: people wave and like that flag for different reasons. It seems now because one reason is overly apparent and also offensive and regarded kind of discriminating (in a racist way) the other reasons why people wave it and are even proud on it shouldn't be acknowledged anymore...
Not even the same fucking flag the south used throughout the entire war. The current one is just a rebellion symbol. But to dumbshits who don't know history and who are too lazy to find the true flag, are the first bitching! Nothing wrong with it at all! Yep, dale Jr bitched out for WWF/Nascar and said he don't like it. Funny thing, all the greats before him, including his father, would have back handed the dumb son of a bitch asap! Good thing is, they are still at the tracks and there is nothing anyone can do about it! Now that it's looked at as bad and needs to come down, I look at the rainbow brite dick licker flag as inappropriate! I want it taken down, or I will when I see one, burn it and put it out with piss! I had no problems with their flag until they fucked with mine, now it's game on and I do go out of my way now to cause problems. That's the beauty of the deconstruction of america, everything 'offends' me now and I'm using it to my fullest advantage.
The KKK is down to 4000 members, nationally. They need you and your hate! Why aren't you down in Columbia, SC protesting today? The pavement is only going to be a little bit hotter than the surface of the sun.
You can't join the klan anymore, it's a 'civil rights' hate group. Only 4k you know of! That and the fact the klan goes by a new name and has many members, it's not going anywhere! I could go join the black KKK that has formed on the south side of Chicago. They are tired of the lowlife thugs and they themselves are taking back their community. They even have a grand dragon to lead the way! Why protest something I'm going to continue to do like a normal day anyway? If it was my state sure, but no reason, like furgie mo, it was outside agitators who caused all the problems, not locals. I could only hope that it splits the nation. America can then be put back on its correct path.
Why not? Just yesterday, I saw somebody flying the CSA second national flag, (the one that's mostly white) surely the rarest one of all, and probably the classiest looking. I wouldn't mind if the owner died a slow and painful death, but I have to give him points for good taste in flags, and for historical accuracy.
As mentioned, it violates 'civil rights'! I'm pretty sure that owner would care if you got shot in the face soon by thugs or if a random act of fun beating you with bats! He will be just as happy as you would. Good thing is, there is more of him, than you! Even when it is you and a couple friends, it's just that more fun and nothing you can do. I can only hope for a split. Too many limp wrists and bleeding heart libtards!
Then how do they have 4000 members? You're not making any sense. Bullshit. CSA flags (of all kinds) have always been very rare in this state. I don't know why any Southerner would want to fly a flag that Robert E. Lee chose not to fly after the war. Trying to be more Southern than General Lee is like trying to be more Catholic than the Pope. Totally absurd.
No one is threatening "your flag." (side note, dont you live in Iowa?) you can still fly it like a good little redneck. It was taken down from the capitol in my state which is something that really has nothing to do with you. The rainbow flag comparison would only be valid if there was a rainbow flag flying on government property somewhere
... and if that was actually happening, I wouldn't like that either, because I don't think the government should be in the business of flying controversial flags of any kind. Official government buildings that are still functioning should only fly the US flag, and the flag of whatever state they are in. Using another kind of flag to make a political or social statement is a private matter. Did you see on the news that only about 35 KKK members showed up in Columbia yesterday? It's about time to stick a fork in that organization. They're done. They're sooooo 40 years ago.
4000 members who acknowledge being a member of! This never crossed you're mind? Nobody's trying to be more southern, just tired of all the PC butt hurt worthless assistance mother fuckers who pick a new thing to bit cheaper about this week. What's the problem with the flag if it was never used? Next week it will be Tylenol, all the blacks will want $$ and piece of mind from picking the cotton out of the bottle! Yep, live in iowa, but family is from the south and my current residence is the northwestern most point that war made it to. Where I live has no point when it comes to whiny ass pussys who bitch until they get their way. They might get their 'day', but there is always dark nights where you can get hit with a bat and who's around to see it? That's the beauty of what people are pushing for. There is always an opposite side to a coin and I love it!
35, lmao! It's not the klan you have to worry about, plus they are not going anywhere. Do you really think you are going to change anything? The hippies and bleeding hearts are the ones who need to give up! They are pussys who can't and won't do shit! Look at the country, the flower children fucked America up! Oh well, they too will die off sooner than later.
Yeah, and hate and ignorance will save america. I can't do a rolleye emoticon on my phone, so please, everyone use your imagination.
I think you and nerdanderthal should see if you can get a package deal on Nazi face tattoos . It really would save you both a lot of explaining, just post a pic of your ugly mug festooned with racist and Nazi symbolism and everyone will know immediately where you stand. Just think of how much more free time you guys would have.
Don't need to, I'll gladly walk up to anyone and say what's on my mind. Don't have any tats for that matter. Not into the nazi crap either. But I will do whatever it takes to keep this country from going to hell like it is. Nobody is going to go out and hold hands nation wide, never gonna fucking happen! Soon as people with their heads in the clouds come back to reality, they might see the fuck ups they caused. Keep on trying, never gonna work, like most of the country!
 That joke's too funny for you to have come up with it. We don't do anything in the middle of your cornfield, which is all you appear to know about. Where I live, a guy with your attitude couldn't hold a job emptying the trash and scrubbing toilets. I don't know what you think you're accomplishing here. You're not influencing anyone's opinion in a way that you would like. I'll keep giving you rope, as long as you keep using it to hang yourself.
