If you want to fly the Confederate flag in front of your home, or fly it from your car or truck, wear a confederate flag patch on your jacket or a flag belt buckle, whatever, that's your business and you should have the freedom to do so, as long as you realize people will suspect that you're a racist. BUT it should not be flown in front of any government building or be part of any state flag. The Civil War was about more than just slavery, but still the Confederate flag was flown by an army that was fighting to preserve slavery and it's long past the time for it to be taken down.
I'm not from the south, so I rarely see confederate flags, nor do I know anyone who flies one. To see one in a front yard or for sale anywhere around here would seem very odd. Anyone I know who has one privately is a racist who uses some cover story as to why the flag represents something other than racism. I used to live in a town where the flags were quite common, and my experiences offered that the town was fairly racist. Strange sight for a place that was not in the southern US. Anyhow, while the flags tend to send a message to people of color, and can certainly offend people, I don't see much use in banning them. There must be some people who genuinely take them as a symbol of something other than hatred. And for the others, removing the flag won't remove the feelings associated with the flag, it won't change anything, it will just give people something to complain about. Any other people from the south care to chime in about how they feel? I'd be interested to hear!
no one has really mentioned banning the flag, just removing it from government property. I wanted to clarify something - I've seen a lot of people refer to the flag as still being on top of the capitol building in SC but its not, it was moved in 2000 (i think that's the correct year) after a lot of protest. The move was considered a compromise, remove it from a government building and keep it on government grounds as a "monument." Meanwhile black government employees still have to walk by it every day.
what about Lil Jon ? Rappers have take the CBF and used it to represent Southern Pride. Considering the facts that we are all slaves to the system. Whats the big deal with the flag/. Couldnt some white supremacist get their own embroiderer to make themselves a new flag? .. just redundant nonsense.
Lil' jon's an attention slut too. Rap and hip-hop are about fashion, has been since the 90's. BTW, exactly what latitude and longitude does southern pride begin? I live pretty far south of Alaska, though I can't think of any good reason to be proud of the fact. It's America, we all live in America. I kinda wish Texas would secede and all the people with "southern pride" can move there.
Slightly related, I saw 20 Feet from Stardom (documentary about background singers) yesterday. I thought it was brilliant that 2 black women sang background on Sweet Home Alabama.
By golly, you're right! That young lady should realize that when people see her like that, the 2nd thing they're going to think is she's a racist.
I don't see why the Confederate flag shouldn't have the potential to become something else. I only enjoy it from a distance as a pattern. It's a nice pattern. I can see why people would like it, and if they say it's got nothing to do with racism, I think I should respect that. It seems to me that since you can't identify a person with a Confederate flag as a racist, that the flag is powerless as a racial symbol. In fact it might be a good decoy, because it would cause confusion amongst people who wanted it to be a racist symbol. That said, I don't think government buildings should be flying it, since at its least harmless it is just a pattern. And patterns aren't chosen for their appeal by mass opinion. If they were, you could fly Danzig flags over state capitols, for instance. It just doesn't work.
