Beyond cool hmm let's see Mangu (Mashed Platains) with fried salami. Sancoho (it's like a soup that has everything in it) Rice and Beans with Chicken fish with coconut Rice with coconut BTW I dont know how to make any of these things, the mangu I can explain I think. What else? To be honest I hate Dominican food, it's good, very meat oriented and I dont meat, it's just not my thing.
mangu sounds good. i lovelovelove fried plantains though:drool: fried salami sounds interesting. i know you dont eat meat really, but do you know how they do it? i mean, theres enough grease in salami already i'd bet you could just throw it in a hot pan and let it sizzle like bacon, right? or do you have to fry it in oil or something? i'm curious!
Almost all of what you listed sounds great, especially the mangu. I used to frequent a couple of Carribean diner type affairs when I lived in London. I fell in love with plantain and chick peas.
Oh yeah fried plantains are dominican too!! haha I forgot about that They are yummy, and you got the sweet plantains and the green plantains that can be fried, so yummy. The salami, I THINK that you cook it like bacon. You slice it and let it sizzle. I'm trying to think if I ever made that. I never cooked when I was back home
well, to be honest i never really knew much about dominican food and still dont. i was introduced to fried plantains at a couple cuban restaraunts in key west. also i liked the yucca a lot, too. and a bunch of meat dishes, but thats probably not interesting to you
oh ok then i dont really know much about the linguistics, so forgive me, but iirc two of the dishes i REALLY liked were....umm....ropa vieja? or vieja ropa? i know vieja means old, doesnt it? anyway, that was yummy stuff and picadillo or something like that....super tasty....i made sandwiches with the leftovers but yeah, i love meat. i wish i didnt but its true i'm trying and generally being good about not eating too much of it these days, though.
ropa vieja, it means old clothes. I always thought the name of that dish was so funny, especially as a child. That's more Cuban than Dominican, but we eat it too. I think picadillo and ropa viea are kinda like the same thing, arent they? It's good that you are trying nesta, I sure feel way better since I stopped eating it, but I was never really a fan either way.
yeah, thats it, old clothes! well, the ropa vieja i had was like shredded meat stewed with tomatoes or something in there....very tasty... the picadillo i had was ground meat, and it was a little more greasy but still very tasty...with like green olives and tomato and onion and stuff in there.... they were kind of similar, but the picadillo seemed a little more rich and probably was worse for me. a bit spicier. i dont know, but i think ropa vieja was stewed and picadillo was cooked in a pan like you do with ground beef i really dont know. i have a nice cuban cookbook at my apartment. i should bust that out when i get back home and see if i can find out what makes them different. still, ive only had either one at a restaraunt in key west, we dont have this kind of food here in ohio that i know of unless you make it yourself i know how to explain it now...picadillo was more like the consistancy of sloppy joes or something, but less sloppy and seasoned completely different.... i guess the dishes are similar, but i liked them both. i wish i didnt oh well the worst part in terms of getting meat out of my diet is that its only slightly morally based. i mostly think its good for reasons of health, budget, and sound use of resources (americans have a largely meat based diet and it is very bad for the environment, and raising animals for slaughter is a big waste of land both to raise the animals and to grow crops to feed to the animals....if we simply cut our meat consumption in half we'd have far cheaper produce because far more land could be used to grow crops for people...i have heard it takes about 10 lbs of grain to raise 1 pound of beef! so wasteful!) so since i love eating meat, and because my reasons to not want to eat meat are only slightly based on thinking its wrong to eat meat and mostly on the ecological/economical reasons, its harder to do.
ok, this is essentially what i know of as picadillo: only its more wet looking than what i had this is essentially what i know of as ropa vieja: but i found these pictures on google and saw that at least with picadillo, there seem to be a few different varieties, some of them looked more like what i know of as ropa vieja.
Ohh ok, now I know what picadillo is, we probably call ir different back home. So many things have so many names. I used to really like ropa vieja, but I havent eaten that in YEARS
