I hear what you are saying, and I can see the logic.
The difference is that there is not another process that seems viable.
Neither is there another word suitable.
We are also talking about words.
If I say they are in "reception centres" does that sound any better?

yeah...words...except the Americans did this to their Japanese citizens in WWII. Ya know, just in case...

I'm a bit mixed on this...as overcrowded as some places in Europe are and a strain on services and such are an issue, the bottom line is they're coming here for a reason. That might be political asylum, but it also might be just to live a life worth living. Growing up in Texas, I was always miffed at people who thought it was their right to spout off at the so-called "Mexican Invasion". I would always ask, "have you ever been to Mexico?" Apart from the resorts, it's destitute, and that dream of hope is just too much to resist, no matter what walls, fences, or however many guards one plans to put on the border.

Europe seems similar. People are coming from Africa and Asia at all costs. Why? The reasons are pretty easy to see. Europe is a beacon of hope, and a chance to live a better life.

Locking people up for 18 months is no deterrant. It's only a plaster answer to a much bigger problem, which has more to do with quality of life elsewhere and economic sustainability. As long as the US and europe stranglehold the trade markets (so called "free trade"), they will keep these countries from reaching sustainability, and their people, no fools, will go where the action is. This is a feeble attempt by the EU to limit populations, but it's not a real solution, which should be no surprise coming from the EU...but that's another story...

I was just attempting to say that a word can have different connotations.
The detentions centres here are not the same as used by the Americans (and us) during the war.
To say so, IMO, is being a tad unfair.

Neither is anybody being "locked up" per se.
See, another wording that can have differing connotations

As far as I can see, this is not about population control. It is just about being in a legal maelstrom. As I have already said, citizens in the EU can come and go as they please. There are far more legal immigrants coming in than there ever will be illegal immigrants. My Figures might be a little dated, but I have read there are less than 2000 people in the differing forms of detention centres (within the UK). There are more houses built in a month than are in detention centres (per year). If it is about population control, it is a pretty weird thing do, don't you think. Infact the UK is crying out for people, near begging. The only 'population control' that occures is self administered by the immigrants themselves. If there is a glut of people in employment, the people that help them here, pick another place.

The new 18 month upper limit, is just that, an upper limit of detention.
It sometimes takes longer to process people than is sometimes allowed, in different EU countries. Fixing it to 18 months as the maximum, prevents people from being in those places for years and years. In limbo, not wanted by their country of origin, not legally allowed to stay in the adopted country.

It is not a prison sentence, neither is it a deterrent.

Western countries need to get over this "save the World's people" complex, people who in many cases overpopulate, and have stupid, idiotic, irresponsible ethnic, religious, and tribal wars, etc..
Western countries don't even begin to take care of their own people. In the U.S. the real unemployment rate is appox. 15-18 percent, much higher than the official rate (which just counts those out of the workforce four months or less). 25% of African-American men are out of work. America's schools, roads, hospitals, clinics, jails are overcrowded to the brim, the environment is being decimated due to excessive population growth due to excessive immigration, and yet the U.S. is letting in record numbers of immigrants, both legal and illegal.
There should be a law passed, no more immigrants until there is full employment, and even then there should be a modest amount of immigrants per year.
In the U.S. one out of four crimes is done by immigrants or their children (in Los Angeles it is 75%).
America has enough indigenous crime, we don't need to import it.
30,000 Americans, many of them poor Blacks and poor Hispanics, have been murdered by illegal immigrants since 9/11/2001, that is ten times the number that died on 9/11. So much for Pres. Bush protecting the country.

The real reason for this influx of poor immigrants into western countries from East Europe and the Third World is cheap labor. The robber barons like it. And the wealthy liberals are dumb enough and/or calloused enough towards their own poor and working class, that they go along with the right wing robber barons. The wealthy liberal elite are a disgrace to the left wing, they are anti-western, and conceited little brats who could care less about the western worker, the environment, or the future of western countries.

No, the illegal immigrants shouldn't be detained for 18 months, they should be sent back immediately.
If the western countries try and save everyone in the world, they won't end up saving anyone, the first world countries will become as crowded and poor as the third world countries.
    _____________________________________
The solution is for the poor countries to behave responsibly and limit their population growth (the world is pushing 7 billion people, it doesn't need any more than that). And the third world countries have to quit having stupid ethnic, tribal, and religious wars. And the first world and third world countries should develop alternative energy more, and get off of fossil fuels.
