    Whoa ... flies. Don't mention those things. When I was on the Oodnadatta Track (South Australian desert ... see http://www.geocities.com/yearighto1892/feature/2003trip/oodnadatta.htm for more ...) I was swatting hundreds of the bloody things. I grew up in the country on the outskirts of Perth so flies aren't anything new to me but I'd never seen them in these numbers. I figured out why Afghans wear shirts over their heads too .... they do it to minimise the annyonce of the bloody things. They won't enter the tunnel that the clothing makes and therefore stay off your face..
