In what way? Constantly going on about a supposed 'crack down' on protests regarding 'gay rights'? I woke up this morning to the news Jenny Jones won the first British medal?
this seems slightly more entertaining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36K8I_5Uze8"]Best of 1998 - The Jenny Jones Show - YouTube
Well yeah, all of those things. Putin has mass popular support and the West calls him a "tyrannical Tsar" ( bit rich coming from Britain, which is about the most feudalist place in the developed world). Then there's the extremists demanding the "right" to promote homosexual and other sexual practices to kids. Oh and one journalist found/PUT a wasp in his honey.. There's no justification for Camoron and Obama turning down an invite to Sochi. I mean they can't stop sucking up to places like Saudi and China. And the US/GB aren't exactly models for the rest of the World. I wonder if Jenny will hand back her medal, now she's read all this?
You and my hubs should hang out and have an Olympic watching party or something. Ugh, I hate it but he loooooves everything about it.
IamnotaMan 'The West' is a fairly broad term. Who exactly? What? Are you serious? Never heard about that. Do you mean sex education in schools? What 'other sexual practices'? Could you quote the part of the legislation for me where these 'practices' are mentioned? Thanks. 'Promote' is a little wide of the mark, don't you think? Is this 'promotion'? OK, these are not 'real' lesbians. As far as I am aware, there is always some so-called controversy - created by the media - before any Olympics. London was supposed to be bombed into oblivion, apparently (or was that something you said?) This seems more likely: 'Although President Putin attended the London 2012 Olympics, previous prime ministers have not often attended the Winter Olympics – in part because Britain tends not to perform particularly well at winter sports.' I doubt it. She would probably laugh more than I am (Ok, I'm just shaking my head in disbelief, to be honest).
I watched a bit of the opening ceremony, didn't strike me as anything brilliant. Perhaps I tuned in during the most boring part By the way, there is a justification for foreign leaders not to come. You may just not agree with it or like it The most intriguing thing I watched in regards to the winter olympics this year is a documentary series of a dutch guy visiting the area of Sotchi and areas around it. He talks to civilians and gets interesting opinions and immerges himself in the local culture (which can differ per village/kind of people) and history (which is often hilariously subjective but sometimes remarkable objective and thus contradictional depending on which he's talking to). A country with many faces for sure
I can understand why foreign leaders may decide to skip going. It might have been political but it may have also just been about security. Obama once came to my town while campaigning and the amount of security just for that was pretty over the top and that was just for people who wanted to see him. Edit to say...he's actually been here twice but the first time was before he became president and security wasn't nearly as heavy.
most olympic sports fall into the category of fun things to do that are boring to watch. especially the annoying way the olympic broadcasters tend to present them.
Ha! That sounds quite how I perceive it as well, undies  Not sure I would take the oppportunity to get on a bobsleigh though..
you keep the runners of your sled warm they move on the ice faster.. however can not be more than 3degees higher than the ice.
why does it have to be a political thing if obama dosnt want to go. maybe he just dosnt want to go to the olympics. there dosnt have to be an agenda.
there is a reason for the tone of the press... and the facilities are brilliant? maybe the ones you have seen, but this is only one of the articles on how the press are treated there.http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...-their-hilarious-and-gross-hotel-experiences/
Figure skating is mind blowing... 'bout all I've watched, simply cos it's been on the TV when I've been in the room. Not that I don't like the olympics, just don't like TV. But yeah, figure skating.. I recommend it. Seriously.. it's mesmerisingly incredibly insanely awesomely impressively dope.
Overall the facilities are absolutely fantastic. If you do some research, the ski facilities are already considered as good as anywhere in Whistler/Europe etc. And Sochi has hotels as good as anywhere (as well as many budget hotels) You have to remember that these are often self-employed journalists looking for a "big story". Much of America and Russia aren't exactly best friends (not helped by the "those darned Commies" lobby that still exists in (supposely!) post-Cold War USA). Those journalists checked in slightly before the games and, if we believe the articles, a few last minute glitches were left to sort. When you consider the gigantic number of guests in what was actually quite a small town until recently, even if these articles were founded, it wouldn't be a big deal. The Atlanta Olympics were considered an absolute shambles. And much of the very worst customer service I've experienced was from posh hotels in the US. AND Western Europe. The odd shortcoming isn't an exclusively Russian phenomenon (despite what the Cold War dinosaurs at Fox News etc might be reporting). The hotels reported were largely the lower end of the price range. Sochi itself isn't a large town. Anyone who's travelled might expect certain shortcomings on occassion. I've been to supposedly top hotels in NYC and found there was no hot water. Or they'd given me a double bed when I specifically requested twin beds. Oh, and AA transat. flights with no food for colleagues who are vegetarian and diabetic. And then sarky replies to complaints saying "ahh you could always bring your own food". My feeling is that America's Establishment is rather butthurt about the Snowden affair, standing up against America's invasions, and the fact Russia didn't acquiese and allow a puppet leader in the Kremlin. Moaning about some lower price hotels is one thing. But not sending America's leader was particularly disrespectful, IMO. The whole tone of the Western press has been obsessed with Russia's laws on promoting homosexuality to children. Which was simply as a smokescreen for other agendas. Strangely, if you want to see a country that actually promotes intolerance, (rather than isolating kids from sexual specifics), you only need look at much of the USA.
The girl with black hair who won gold, was SUPER-hot.:2thumbsup: If they were pigs, I'd have turned over.
