The reason SNP got in was because people here got so sick of labour! Most of the people I spoke to who voted SNP said that they we're too bothered with independence, but they just wanted a scottish party witch didn't have whips in england...
No, because of its location it is technically Scottish oil. If Scotland were independent it would be an immensely rich oil economy! Until it runs out, anyway...
Couple of things, the SNP were not voted in because the scottish people want independance, in fact, a refferendum would be destined to fail. They were voted in due to dissalusion with New Labour. And only just at that. They are oppotunists. They have swung between thatcherism and social democratism since their formation. Their economics dont work; with all the oil crap, independence would only be viable for 30 years or so. Its also a daft economic principle to seperate some of the most deprived area's in the country (glasgow containing over half of the poorest neighbourhoods in the UK i believe) from teh most affluent... Seperation only devides the working class, when really, the working class of the UK should be fighting together, not apart.
eh, the barnett formula dictates scotland get more back from central government than we contribute, i dont really think that the oil does anything mroe than balance that out.
Fair enough, the point made was that Scotland is a drain on the British economy, but I think this assumes north sea oil revenues to be British rather than a specifically Scottish contribution. I don't know the figures so may well be talking bollocks, but a sizeable chunk of British GDP comes from the energy sector and the loss of oil revenues to an independent Scotland would significantly impact the British economy and benefit the Scottish...
westminster has spent the last half-century testing their nuclear weapons in the hills and lochs of scotland. westminster tested the poll tax in scotland first. westminster wants to take away our regiments and make one large super regime. i'm not pro-military, but this our heritage they're destroying. westminster tried out nuclear power in scotland first. where does all the nuclear/hazardous waste from the UK go?? yup, you guessed it! scotland. so why the fuck should we remain guinea-pigs to westminster?? all they're doinng is destroying our planet and culture. english rule took away our tartan for a long time in the past. english rule has lead to the killing of our language, Gaelic. english rule is doing us no good and it's our oil. it's our nuclear power. it's our fucking country! all the animals that die of oil spills or exposure to nuclear waste are on our land but are victims of westminster. everything westminster comes up with gets tested on us first and we sit back and do fuck all about it! HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO BE PUSHED AROUND AND USED?! HUH?! c'mon, folks... get real; think about the future, for your children, for your country, for your planet and then vote for the right thing!! half of you have all these mumbo-jumbo textbook rigmarole totalitarian-schematic information sources to back your claims. just think for yourself. think for the good of everyone, not for the good of your pay cheques. but, anyway, peace arry:
English rule? Come off it mate, it's UK rule. Sure england make up the majority of that, but they make up the majority of the UK. GO figure. We can now wear tartan, Gaeilic is legal (yet its more functional to speak the language spoken throughout the UK), and independence will certainly NOT cause scotland to go back to speaking gaelic. It's our oil. Come on mate, it's clearly owned by a few elites, and independence wouldnt change that. And just to go independent becuase its OUR oil is rediculous, we'd be like the kid saying "well its MY ball, and YOU'RE not playing!". You talk about animals dying from oil spills, now, since when would independence stop them from happening? Your atitude seems imply that scotland would continue harvesting the oil, so stop being so emotive and start puting forward some coherent arguments.
Nationalist politics is a diversion from the realisation of socialist objectives. It shifts the target from internal elites to external elites. Granting Scotland independence would only shift power from one elite to another, it would not address the fundamental inequalities bound to the nation....
I think this election certainly demonstrates how the SSP's commitment to nationalism has undermined their cause. Ultimately they were not the choice for nationalists, and by buying into the nationalist consensus they've undermined their more progressive policies....
