    Various things:-

1)Can mean insincere people about to stab you in the back.

    2)Temptation or wisdom.

I had a really horrible dream about snakes. (Probably inspired by my cat's tail sliding against my face while I was asleep hehehe!)

Anyway, I realised that the snake symbolised wisdom. Snakes eating themselves symbolised thoughts eating themselves. Finally I motioned with my hands and the snakes "evaporated". It meant that my ideas/thoughts had been eating themselves, and become "monsters"/ a curse. It was time to stop going round in circles, as the snakes had done.

Kind of weird yes, but I'd figured it out from the various details. And it has helped me a lot in real life. Even tho the dream itself was absolutely hideous. hahha

compared to humans, the snake is a relatively harmless reptile. at least not maliciously harmful. though some might be potentially deadly. this is not their fault nor intent.

at any rate, what anything symbolises to us, comes from our own cultural experiences and expectations.

personally i tend to be sceptical of one to one absolute representations and symbolism.
