jim morrison had his voice, and smoking would've destroyed it if he hadn't died.

But if you sing the blues you can puff until smoke comes out your eyes

Wow... you have the dandy warhols' sleep in your sig :D I love them...

And yes... with blues and some jazz styles, it really doesn't matter. :D Actually, it's better if you did smoke with blues.

If you want some proof of smoking changing someone's voice, compare some early Joni Mitchell to some recent. There's a huge difference.

The Beatles smoked for a really long time, especially Ringo, and their voices never faltered. But it's not a path I'd wanna take....

Even if it DOESN'T mess up your voice right away, your lungs won't be as strong so you'll have to take breaths more often. Even if you exercise your lungs (for instance- breathing exercises for wind musicians), you can never get the same capacity when you start smoking.

I started smoking about 2 years ago and my voice has lost a lot of the strength and clarity it once had. I can still sing, and i'm sure those who smoke still sing good as well, but it does take away a lot. Especially since your lungs can't expand as much from the tar build up, you can lose that legato, continuous singing for 30 seconds thing. Also, it makes it harder to open up I think. All in all, my voice has changed noticably since I started, but I wouldn't say it's bad but it could be better and it is getting worse.

are people blind to the fact that practically every big artist smoked cigaqrettes?

if you want to be a bohemian opera singer then dont smoke!

if you want to be a huge artist and have a voice that captures millions then just be careful for lung cancer

i think being stoned makes me more likely to go slightly off key, and my voice isnt as deep and smooth

cigaretes however make my voice cleaner and sharper

im no good singer though, i need to get better

but if you think smoking stuff is going to ruin your career as an artist? your deluded. as a professional singer? lets just say you should keep an eye on your voice, and remember that lungs heal. see if smoking ruins your voice. does it? then YOU shouldnt smoke. let each person's voice see for itself

generally speaking, smoking can only have a negative effect on your voice, unless you are going for the really raspy gravelling thing. Not only could it affect your range, but the damage to your lungs also decreases the power of your voice, forcing you to put more effort into singing louder, or at either end of your range.

as bill said, most of the big artists do smoke, so i wouldn't invest to much worry into yet, however it may cause your voice to diminish at an earlier age than that of a non-smoker.

Well, I smoke, Im in a band, I think it limits my range. Especially now after I have started smoking a lot more! It also limits your time here on earth! I am desperately working up the fortitude to quit someday, justr not today!
