I read an article somewhere in which someone pointed out that different generations associate different scents with their early childhood memories. I sometimes get feelings or memories from my early life when I smell certain scents. Windex glass cleaner brings to mind images of springtime around the house I grew up in. When I smell bacardi rum or bourbon whiskey I think of high school. I was a child in the 70s and in high school and college in the 80s. I think Windex is a common memory evoking scent for my generation. Sometimes I think of things like silly putty and I remember the smells even though I haven't smell them in years. Just a random thought.
Some of my scent triggers... 1)cat fur - reminds me of being woken up by mine as a baby. 2)tent insides and sleeping bags etc - their smell reminds me of camping out as a kid. 3)coca cola - reminds me of Summer days outside a pub, as a kid. 4)the smell of old boxes from the USSR. Reminds me of presents I'd get from my grandmother. 5)baby lotion - reminds me of an ex of mine who worked as a lap dancer.. (she'd smell of it, when she came home from work )
Hm, yea, I agree with you about the silly putty. Just thinking about it (and I have been thinking of soon buying it for my son and even thought of this then), for some reason makes me "smell" it even though I don't really think sully putty even has a particular scent? I'm not sure.. Lysol I think and dusting supplies in general remind me of nice, casual, relaxed Saturday mornings, with my mom, my brother and I all dusting then vacuuming the house. Tanning lotion/sunscreen/sun block remind me of the beach...especially if there is coconut in it. I'm sure there are others but.. oh wait! There is a cologne.. I have no clue what it is.. but in 1998-2000 all the hot/cool boys used it in high school and it smelled delicious. Like it was almost intoxicating. I should go back and say not that many boys used it but I didn't find that many hot n awesome.. so, a few... but I smelled it a few places elsewhere (hot guys, lol)... no clue what it was but it made me really heated up and I'd be curious to finally know what it was. LOL and yea..tent and sleeping bags... and rain on the trees (not sure what kind of tree) on a dewey morning at the beach...
My moms perfume takes me right back to my childhood. She is the only person I've ever known that has worn that particular perfume. I still smell it from time to time. That's when I feel the closest to her. There is the obviously grandparents house smell. Why do old people smell like that? Lilac always takes me back to being a kid too. My neighbor had a huge lilac bush and I would always pick them for my mom because she loved them. The smell of leather reminds me of good times too.
I have a lot of "smell" related memories and when it happens it is like I do a time warp and I am back there again, in a good way. My kids do it all the time as they come in the house and sniff and go are you making........... I smile as that is what I grew up with, was a mom who made things and the house smelt nice. They also sniff their beds. That sounds strange but they both love clean sheets and when I change their beds they both actually leave their beds and thank me as they smell fresh. Smells can be a good thing.
cedar my grandfather used lots of cedar in his woodshop projects...the smell always makes me remember him
That made me think of my dad. I had a guinea pig for years and the shavings always made me think of dad. He love to do wood work and the shavings would be all over. Thanks BBAD as it is a good memory.
I would sleep in my grandma's bed sometimes or just hang out in her room. The scent of her bed and her room and her make-up and all that reminds me of my childhood. My favorite scent is probably the one that I smell when I walk into her room and especially if I sit or lay on her bed.
