I was just wondering whether anyone regularly attended new bands gigs? I'm not talking about big bands, quite the opposite - for example gig nights put on sometimes unsigned bands, or by bands on very small labels, at pubs or clubs or such.

I regularly try to go to new events and show my support for anyone trying to make it into the music scene. My village spawned a very succesful band (in terms of small band, they are signed though) from Yorkshire.

York is a cool place to check out new bands, there's some good stuff out there :)

So, do you visit smaller band gigs, if so, who has stood out for you?

For me, "the Hair" are a good band, if you can find it online, check out their first album "The future is certain: it's the past that's in doubt" for a real good kinda raw new band style, since then they have moved on, the music is still good, but for me the earlier songs stick out. Anyone want some songs by them, just say :)

Peace to y'all, may the music never stop!

I'm a huge supporter of small scenes and small venues. Long enough to have some war stories.
Currently, I'm catching KanNal, a tribal trance group,
Garaj Mahal, Fareed Haque Group, Tha Muse Meant, and a bunch of others in the mini-tour level.
Bands I remember in small venues:
String Cheese Incident & Keller Williams: 600 people Curtain Club/Dallas TX
Yobder Mountain String Band George's back room, certificate of occupancy said 300. My guess is 450 were there.
Steve Kimock many, many times at Chester's Place, Fayetteville Ark. god... 300 max?
Jerry Douglas with 130 people in a 900 person house.
Arlo Guthrie in many <1000 seat venues
    Leftover Salmon 700 people
    moe. <900
Phish 3000, not sold out, probably 2500. Oct 95
Widespread Panic 3000 sold out and not, same venue
Matisyahu singing an aliya last Shabbot at my synogogue, 40 people plus the kids (+20?)

I saw a band in New Port Richey Florida at a bar called Bourbon Street called Project 13, they rocked that place hard. Awesome band but never heard anything of them after that. Wish I could get my hands on some of their music.

this local pawn shop is hosting some kind of cookout, and I ended up talking with the shop's owner (i didnt know he was the owner) about places to play around here -- basically, there are none -- but he asked me if I was good, and naturally I said "yeah".. so I played him some songs and afterwards started doing some jazzy shit, and he told me that he's the only kid he knows of in this town that can play both rhythm and lead well (i cant really play lead just yet, just a couple of Charlie Christian solos I've been messing with these last couple of days, but he doesnt know that :p ).. and then he asked me if i wanted to play at his cookout.

as long as the mics work, I'll do great. :sunglasse

Sounds cool... are you gonna get anyone to video a part of it, or record it? If you do, be sure to post it on here :)

Not only do I go out and support local and smaller bands, but I've played in clubs for quite a while too. I saw Wille Nelson the other day at a big place, first "concert" I've been to in years.

I doubt it, but who knows..

I'd have a whole bunch of stuff recorded and available online, but my ACID was deleted. :( this computer's too slow to go download it again... but mayhaps next time I'm having some kind of creative block I'll do that.

A friend of mine drums in a quite new black metal band called Saeculum. All of the members have been reasonably established in the Dutch underground through different bands before this so you can be sure they don't sound like a garage band made up of 13 year olds. I've seen their first concert a few weeks ago and will be attending their next one this coming sunday, together with Onheil and Vuist.

    anytime, pleasure to help :)

I'm going to a small gig near york in a couple of weeks... I'm not much into the bands there, as I have seen them before, but it's more of a gig party, so it should be a laugh :)

I wonder where in town I will wake up :D

good thread, though U.S. may be some different from other parts of the world, I hear what you're saying.

I have become totally spoiled hearing so much new local "unknown" music in my region, it's all I prefer lately. I'd rather hear any up and coming band than the big names. the newer, more local bands have so much passion and energy, trying to be heard and stand out from the pack, and the big names sometimes seem so jaded, they have succumbed to the "business" I guess and it wears them out. give me new music any day, especially those who still have the passion. that's how I see it anyway.

Also a lot of the bands with nothing to lose are more apt to let loose and explore new sounds, just because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain. makes for some good music moments.

oh yeah, meant to say too, a lot of the bands I have become fond of have websites with free downloads, makes it nice when you want to hear them again. and some give out free discs at shows so you can spread their music to your friends. do they do that in U.K. and elsewhere? very effective way of spreading their sound.

^Yeah, but mainly in the UK the music is passed through other people, like the band will gove a few people CD's, which get copied for whoever wants them, and is what the bands want, not money but more people into their music.

People like me - for example I do my best to send MP3's of bands whom I know want their music spreading. Also, many people volunatrily design small websites for the bands with mp3's.

It's good for the bands that there are so many people reasy to spread the word and music for them. Is it like that in the US too?

Names of new bands? Hmm... I'll have to consult my collection of gig notices for that, I'm not too good on names. if you want to hear what I consider an excellent small band, I can send some work of The Hair if you like :)
