Precisely... although I don't bother with cardio, not yet anyways... I'm sure in a few years it will become absolutely necessary in order to maintain the abs, but for now I'm trying not to burn too MANY calories (yeah, my wife hates me for that btw haha) speaking of back, heres a shot of my lats at their widest a couple months back. Don't mind the bright red skin tone, I had just gotten back from Puerto Panasco, Mexico and spent all weekend on the beach...
a lot of good advice in this thread already. i'd just like to reitirate the point on commitment to reaching your goals. another thing that i don't think was mentioned is, dont' spend all your time reading all about the new ways to bulk, right now you want to just get out there and do it - keep it simple for now. i know way too many people who just keep reading and reading trying to find the "perfect" program, so instead of working out, they're sitting on there ass all day trying to find something that doesn't exist. 5 exercises for mass gain - deadlift, squat, bench, clean, pull up (hands facing away) http://www.t-nation.com/index.do - has awesome articles and forums http://www.elitefts.com/articles/Current-Articles/default.asp - has awesome articles and an awesome selection of books http://www.startingstrength.com/index.html - great beginner book
Ohhh, your wife sounds like me. My husband just recently started drinking major-calorie laden protein shakes to put on weight. He's almost 6' but weighs around 165 pounds. He lifts weights three times a week. He WANTS to gain weight, and work it into muscle. Me, on the other hand, I work out to tone my muscles and lose weight. I mainly do cardio. I get so mad watching him drink those fattening shakes. Mad! I'm on the shorter side, only 5'3" and every little pound will show up on me. I told him how nice it must be to actually want to gain weight. Ugghhh! I'm jealous I tell you! Makes me want to smack him one!
Because there are some of us, women especially, that work our butts off NOT to be HYOOOOOOOOOOOOGE! It's not fair I tell you!
Hehe, as long as it's for yourself and no one else, nothing wrong with being extremely fit. Still sexy in my book. My poor boyfriend is 23 years old, 5'11", and 120 pounds, but he's as ripped as someone who weighs so little can be. Awesome definition...yum. Haha. I feel bad for him, though, he wants to gain weight and still remain as fit as he is. Doubt he can, though, his metabolism is way too fast and his blood pressure is way too low.
dave was once in the same boat. wait til he turns 30. it gets easier. though dave deliberately ate until he'd throw up because he was getting ready for some competition of some sort. sounds horrible to me. but it worked.
I've allways been a "bigger" guy. Not obease or anything...just meaty. I am currenty way out of shape and weigh around 200 (6' 2''). But there was a time when I couldn't be any more fit. I was lifting 5 days a week, running 4 days a week. I had a 6 pack and could flex just about any part of my body. That time was also the heaviest I've ever been (230). I look bigger now at 200 then I did then at 230. I I went to my old High Schools weight room a couple weeks ago when I decided to get back into shape, but was terribly discouraged. Not because of intimidation from others, but because I used to push press 200 lbs, and I couldn't even get my old warm up set above my head. I couldn't care less what the other people thought there, but it just felt like something out of the twilight zone. So now I'm just doing stuff around the house (push/pull ups, sit ups, and lifting anything that I can find thats heavy) so it will feel more like home when I go and dive back in
