There's just been some painfully stupid economic policy over the past eight years. When Bush came into office, if he were a real conservative, he would have taken that surplus we had, maybe introduced some limited across-the-board tax cuts, and started to pay down the debt. Not radically slash taxes, encourage the upward transfer of wealth, and then engage in a major overseas war to boot.

Word on the street, is that all those pensions lost are really going to hurt much more in the coming months.

 

I would set the time period way before that. At least back to Nixon.

Clinton's surpluses were nothing but number-crunching. There is no actual surplus in the midst of deindustrialization. Impossible. iggy:

I was thinking more in terms of- if a white guy cures cancer; the likelyhood of white students receiving scientific grants and scholarships increases. Those may be your children, or your neighbor's children, etc.

well i can't and wouldn't argue that. it seems a pretty obvious thing to me. but if a couple nazi-freaks shoot obama, all white people are to blame? c'mon, that ain't right. people of reason have for YEARS been trying to get around that sort of mentality and we can fall back on the sorta bullshit that had a guy stabbing a working man with a flag in rage THAT QUICKLY? that's just sad.

That's the thing. If every time the obvious fact that there is racism on an institutional level is met with such personalizing banality- the argument that racism needs to be addressed is dismissed.

In fact, that contributes to apathy. Because you're not personally to blame for racism, does not mean you don't enjoy certain privileges shared in common by white people.

 

so, basically, since white people are in power, in general, all people who aren't white give me credit for something good a white person does. but if white people i don't know do something awful, while i'm going along trying to be a good person, i'll still get blamed for it by all people who aren't white and i deserve it because i'm apathetic?

HOWEVER, you do enjoy certain privileges on the macro level...just like I face disprivileges on a macro level which I'm in no way personally reponsible for.

I don't live in a dangerous neighborhood. But because I'm black (or half-black) a cab driver in Manhattan is likely to assume that and refuse to pick me up.

On the plus side, when I go to parties I get to be cool-like-mike and white women think I have a big dick.

hahha. it's so frustrating, man. i actually live my life by a pretty strict moral code. there isn't anyone who's alive who hasn't benefitted in some way by someone else's misfortune and most people aren't expected, nor should they be, to feel bad about that. all i know how to do is my personal decisions and expect the same of other people. don't hurt anyone if you can possibly avoid it. i was raised to think, perhaps overly optimistically, of the usa as "we" not "us and THEM." i'm trying to raise my daughters that way, but sometimes it's just one of those stupid personal struggles that you want to see behind you. like dishes and bills you can't pay.

 

yeah, that sucks though, right? i never got the LA rioters tearing up their own neighborhoods. it made no sense at all.
