Has anyone mentioned Rancid? Some of their stuff (eg. Red Hot Moon, Old Friend and in particular Time Bomb) is very ska.
Top Ska For your lovely ears in London on 10th June http://www.ticketweb.co.uk/user/?region=gb_london&query=detail&event=154655&interface=
al right, im back and i'v gotten a lot more in ska, i'v gone to some shows and have really looked into the toronto scene (thats where i live), and gone to some local shows. heres some bands iv come uo with that i like. the Johnstones the makesift heroes Green Division westbound train the aggrolites Keepin' 6 the agency Big D and the kids table streetlight manifesto the skatilites toots and the maytals the toasters the aquabats the madness the specials some of The Police Reel Big Fish the planet smashers the heatstrokes mustard plugs mad caddies cheap suits Sublime Owen Grey the Upsetters Alton Ellis Max Romeo the slakers the aggrolites the mighty mighty bosstones if u live in toronto and like ska u should check out this site: 4th wave
yea haha i saw them with the aquabats too, it was a great show, do you have whole wheat bread or streetlight? we got stuck with wwb. all the kids were douche bags, i had to try really hard to make a skank circle and even than some people gave me looks like 'what is he doing!?'
ya i had wwb, which i think kinda ruend the set. no one skanking it was just a moshpit, even for 'super rad'. the aggrolites played well though.
sorry to be such a smartass....lol....but a lot of the bands you guys named are not ska, but ska_punk to me....which is a genre i'm not particularly fond of so i might be the wrong person to ask (a big exception is the spanish band ska.p....obviously ska-punk, very political, too....i suggest you check 'em out) ska for me is what happened to be the popular music of jamaica in the 1960s (along with rocksteady...) before "reggae" - as the western world knows it - emerged in the seventies like toots & the maytals skatalites of course prince buster etc
Yes that is what would fit under the First wave of ska, which died, than Second Wave (two tone) emerged, than the Third Wave of the 90s which you dont like. Though dont hate a band for its genre, 3rd wave bands such as streetlight manifesto have lyrics definatly worth listening too. But yes, First wave is the best, if it werent for Prince Buster and the Maytals the specials wouldnt have many big hits since their big hits like Gangsters and Rudy a message to you, are covers.
No-one's mentioned Slightly Stoopid, they're one of the best bands around, especially the acoustic stuff - Closer To The Sun, Collie Man, and Fat Spliffs.
ya slightly stoopid are very good, but i wouldn't concider their stuff ska...mabie stuff like I'm so stoned, but i'd say thats more reggae. and the acoustic stuf is definately not ska, however it is very good... Peace
Some other fairly small ska bands are Angry Banana, Synthetic Elements, We Are The Union, and 12 Cents for Marvin. And if you don't mind British stuff then Grown at Home, The JB Conspiracy, and Random Hand.
Definitely the Aquabats, Mustard Plug, Melmac, Bim Skala Bim, Choking Victim, Catch 22, Skankin' Pickle, Sublime/Long Beach Dub Allstars, MU330, the Toasters, Reel Big Fish, Save Ferris.
