Does anyone else find it odd how being peaceful, loving, and pacifistic is thought of as a joke?

It's sorta worrying if you think about it. What conditioned us to think in that backwards way? Don't we all want peace, love, and no violence? I don't get it... I mean. Isn't the whole reason we goto war is to gain peace (contradictory, yet it is accepted for how it can bring about peace... eh?)?

I don't get it. How is being a hippie an insult?

How can republicans that talk about having Christian values, turn around and love the military, and hate hippies... Wasn't Jesus a hippie...? .......

    Oh brother.

I'll say this about hippies, though:

    Just because you're a hippie doesn't mean you don't bath and/or lazy.

Hippies that don't wash themselves are gross, though... I guess I can see why that would be an insult, if used to mean stinky-bum-type... but that's not what being a hippie is about.

def zepellin, i know what you mean! it's like everyone wants violence, and when it happens, it's such a mob mentality, that you can't even have a fight just between two people. The only fight I was ever in, with with a group - against just me! And it was a jump. This is just ridiculous.

Also, I had a kid in my school, a very good friend of mine who graduated, who barely showered. He was very much a hippie, but I didn't see how not showering was part of that. Either way, we accepted it, because that's how he wanted to live - and even now, he sometimes showers! He got made fun of, but not even because of being a hippie. I guess people didn't know what to call him, so it was just "freak" and other stupid names they call the whole group.

dancing_bear92 that bites that you and this kid clash, but hey peace and cool that you can put up with him!

I don't mind hippies. Hell, I'm on this forum, right :D

Hippie girls with armpit-hair calling themselves "natural mama's".. That's a bit of a tick-off, though.

I don't get made fun of as much as I used to...
In grade 9, I preached Timothy Leary in English class. Yes, I wanted attention, but I was also genuinely trying to express myself... I can't believe I was that idiotic and pretentious. Of course I got made fun of for it. They didn't usually call me a hippie, they just thought I was insane and tripping on acid. People were a little intimidated by me. I was also wearing Grateful Dead shirts, had shaggy long hair and big sideburns (I was pretty proud to be the only 14 year old I knew who could grow them...) So around that time, I had a "hippie" reputation going, which had mostly negative connotations since I didn't hang out with the stoner kids and just kind of stood out among everyone else. Some people were freaked out by me, others ridiculed me or looked down on me. Few people took me seriously at all.
Now, after 2 years, I've chilled out a bit, rethought my philosophies and ideals and just kind of matured in general. I dress a little more conservatively than before and talk as articulately as I can. I don't try to interact with most people when I'm high. So people take me and my ideas seriously and listen to what I have to say. They're not as turned off by appearances. Sure, I get made fun of for some stuff, but when kids call me a hippie, they're at least being good natured about it. I'm still a hippie, but I try to be a bit more of an intellectual and usually get treated that way. Ignorant punks usually have something genuinely insulting to say when they try to insult me. So for me, "hippie" isn't much of an insult.

i'd love to meet a natural mama actually. i really don't know who ever came up with that joke, but to me it makes just no sense that all girls should shave their armpits. why?

as for the topic of this thread, i'm befriended with a bunch of punks. probably the wildest punks in town (wow:p), but yeah overhere there ain't no big division between punks and hippies. its more important if your real (old skool punk/hippie/metalhead) or just a newby emo or just someone who is some kind of over-the-top stereotype alternative peep. though i even have 'emo' friends. to me those labels don't mean so much. to those punks neither, i play in a band with a bunch of them writing the music and the lyrics most of the time. to me punk is the ultimate way to just rant on how sick society really is.

too bad other people feel different about that.
