show trading is the lifeblood of the jam world. Started by jazz buffs in the 40s, Dead Heads glommed on the the idea, and a section of the arenas and stadiums had a forest of mic stands. Today, with digital recording, you might see a daisy chain of DATs linked from one soundboard patch, or a set of mics. The ethics are trade for free, bnp (or Blanks aNd Postage) are acceptable, although cds are so cheap that that is going by the wayside in some communities. Now a lot of the trading is off sites like www.archive.org where you download onto your computer and burn your own disc. NEVER BURN AND TRADE A COMMERCIAL RELEASE! Most jambands are taper friendly, if you have questions, see the band's site under "taping policy." Also check with venues, if you can. Some do not allow taping and over ride bands who do not have a rider in the contract. Some festies limit numbers of tapers. The idea is to distribute the shows for free and not make profit on them. Traders beware, I'm in with a LOT of the bands discussed here, many are friends. I WILL tip them to this site. If you trade commerical releases, they will find out. A few people being greedy shut down a lot of taping.
Good for you!! But, I don't think we need to be watched over... from what I've seen there's only been one person on these boards that has disrespected trading rules, and he got his ass chewed. I think this was unnecessary at this point... Did you just want to toot your own horn, and let us know your connections?? Again... good for you!
i've got the disco biscuits from: december 29th, 2004 - philadephia pa at the electric factory march 24th, 25th, and 26th, 2005 - sayreville, nj at the starland ballroom i also have the following phish: 09-12-1999 - Portland Meadows, Portland, OR 08-12-2004 - Tweeter Center, Camden, NJ and probably another dozen or so phish shows on my external hard drive, but I don't feel like hooking it up right now so I'll list them later. what I am looking for is some live tool and some live blind melon in good sound quality. also, I wouldn't mind having that pearl jam unplugged that was mentioned earlier.
hmm..so should I simply alert the bands that prosecute? or should the newer kids who will come here know that folks are watching? and maybe discourage such behaviours? Some management actually looks for people making money off discs as well. I think Phish does, rather ineffectively, as I have seen the Halloween of the White Album for sale in record stores across the country. I don't care if someone is trading stealth from not-taper-friendly bands, just making sure that we are not cutting "our peeps" from their fair share. Plus, which would you rather have? A commercial release or a magical show? That said. PLEASE support the bands and get the commercial releases. Give' em away, hang them on your wall, or whatever, but support the organizations. Especially smaller scenes. I think I have three shrink wrapped JFJO discs from long ago. I know I have albums I've listened to once.
Keller Williams ask that anything you burn a disc that he has released that you send him five dollars!
I have massive amounts of Cheese, tons and tons! And I'm looking for Leftover Salmon shows or Yonder Mountain Shows. I also have a decent amount of Dead and Phish. Please PM me if you got some good Salmon/Yonder and I'll hook it up.
"Traders beware, I'm in with a LOT of the bands discussed here, many are friends. I WILL tip them to this site. If you trade commerical releases, they will find out. Yeah, I was talking to Mike Travis of Cheese about this at Waka and he said don't trade the livecheese.com SBD releases, however if you get it off archive or from a taper at a show its all good. They really support trading, and they want to make their music accesible to everyone however they have to make some money too so abide by their wishes. He didn'y mention the OTR releases but I think thats a give in. Don't trade em. As far as Phish goes you can't trade livephish from either the site or the released series. The Grateful Dead don't care unless your trading Dick's Picks.
I'd say OTR is a given, too. When getting OLD cheese, look for Larry Fox's (of OTR series) name in the sequence, that's how he started, and look for the no longer taping Frank Seanez. Also Mike Juday: all great tapers who really worked the kinks out! These are, imo, some of the best cheese out there. These days, for shows from the Denver area, look for a Maury. this cat is a perfectionist freak amongs TAPERS, who are, thank g-d, perfectionist freaks.
I have 2 String Cheese Cassette Tapes from the 4/25/00 shop in Washington DC at the 9:30 club. I got these from a guy at Bonaroo this past year. (I think I traded him a joint or something, lol) Currently, my tape player broke, and it would be too expensive to get it fixed. Pretty much these are just sitting on my desk, being bad paper weights. If anyone is interested in them, let me know. I would be more than happy to just give them to you. Peace
bump after a forum move For those who are unfamiliar with trading of live shows, understand that this does not mean copying a commercial release, and if you are trading a taper unfriendly act, you might want to be VERY subtle. Those are best moved face to face or between true friends.
