A differant way for humanity to "run the world,"so to speak. There are so many "things"that could be done, were we not so interested in the old ways. Instead of, for example, allowing people in many parts of Africa to go almost without water,if we were solvent as a country, thousands of wells could be drilled. Instead of exploiting the resources of other countries(Chiquita Bananna in Central America, Chevron in the Congo) we help them develop their resources for their own people. Not to mention the monatary troubles we are having that never should have been allowed---we could help those people instead of what we do. We're not the only ones that are exploitive, but couldn't we be the bigger people in that we could show the world a differant way. I think the returns would be many in good will and a differant understanding of what this country means. It's complicated to get somewhere else from where we are now. All I want is some ideas on how to make our world a better one for all concerned.
I didn't say anything about God. Helpful is a matter of timing. To be personally competent in life means you need neither be supported nor contained. First do no harm. Become environmentally neutral.
It may be complicated, but I refuse to believe it can't be done We need everyone's ideas and input to find/ synthesize common solutions for the greater good. Unfortunately, it's difficult to have clear thoughts when you're worried about basic needs like affording energy or food or housing, etc. If the common mans basic needs were brought to more equitable standards, this could cause less selfish goals for the individual and could give rise to better ideas for civilization all around. Never underestimate the better impulses of common people. I was a bell-ringer for the Salvation army one christmas...one thing I noticed, the people that seemed to donate the most were the poor and downtrodden.
I agree and to add--every time my car broke down when I was young,it has been Mexicans that stopped to help. Some kind of kinship there. Probably them living on the edge like most of us do when young. Any time one starts talking about sharing or some measure of socialism ,or attempting a new way to live, the shit storm starts and anyone that even wants to see if there's a more equitable and humane way for us to institute some changes, the" I got mine, the hell with you" crowd comes forth. You are certainly correct when you say it's difficult to affect changes--for example-millions marching on Washington for one reason or another, while action depends on the freedom to do so while worrying about the basics. I don't think our troubles-the economy-the oil spill-the wars-are near ending yet,so there doesn't even seem to be a place to start to formulate some solutions. I haven't helped anything at all with my posts in this thread--not sure how I can. But I can see who understands what I'm trying to get at.
My vote is yes. The reasoning for this can be found in that old hippie saying "Bombing for peace, is like fucking for virginity".
Bin Laden is not in Pakistan. My sources tell me he is in the Swiss Alps, sipping hot cocoa and weaving tapestries.
The military should have been out a year ago, as to the fact that we fucked up there system we need some way of giving them restitution for deciding that it was our job to play global policeman. As to how to atone for that, I am stumped.
They still want troops there, and still overwhelmingly approve of the toppling of the taliban http://abcnews.go.com/images/PollingUnit/1083a1Afghanistan2009.pdf
Please refer to page 3 in the pdf linked above. We don't have to remove all the troops at the drop of the hat but we should wean down the number of soldiers in Their country.
Why would we ween it down when we obviously don't have enough as it is. The Afghan army is still in no state to take control of things.
Army Basic Combat Training.......9 weeks Marine Corps Recruit Training....12 weeks Navy Boot Camp........................8 weeks Air Force Recruit Training.........8.5 weeks Coast Guard Recruit Training.......8 weeks If we can't train an Afghan army in 8 years, it's because they don't want one. If they have no interest in defending their own country, why the hell should we? .
