It was originally based on revenge...first for the trade center (afghanistan) ...then they switched to revenge against trying to kill daddy Bush (Iraq) which originally was for oil (1992) so I guess maybe the Iraq part could be considered oil related...but Afghanistan was definitely revenge based..

also I want to change my vote...yes they should withdraw...but only after everyone else has..and they should pay billions to rebuild the schools and hospitals they ruined

Actually the U.S. alone has given about $10 billion in domestic aid to Afghanistan so far. Most Afghans still consider the toppling of the taliban a good thing, 70% think the invasion by US troops even after how bad we fucked it up is a good thing and want NATO troops to stay

In fact schools were the highest ranked among Afghans with 74% saying the schooling conditions were good, the next closest were water and food at 65%.

Cameron said hopefully they can be gone within 5 years, but won't hold to a time table.

There are many caveats, yes. That is why I said "should" not "would".

In the meantime though hasn't Cameron pledged enough more troops to take the UK total to 10,500

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4IfABv8KE0"]YouTube- David Cameron speech: 'I will send more troops'

He says yes. But he seems to have flip-floped slightly. Plus, his words have been bastardised far too much to really know. I have not read anything to suggest what he really desires (aside from wishing for combat troops to be gone in 5 years).

For the record I think this poll is also misleading in the fact 1/3 of troops in Afghanistan are non-American

    *edit*
In fact, current troops numbers, give or take
    USA - 79,000
    UK - 10,000
    Germany -4,400
    France - 3,800
    Italy - 3,300
    Canada - 2,900
    Poland - 2,500
    Turkey - 1,700
    Netherlands - 1,700
    Australia - 1,600
    Spain - 1,400
    Romania - 1,400
    Georgia - 1,000

All others have less than about 1,000, Denmark, Bulgaria, Sweden, Czech republic, Belgium and Norway each have 500 or more.

Other countries have decided to leave. Other countries are weighing up when to leave. The question seems to be about American troops. I think we are departmentalising here...

To be fair the poll will only mislead those not already aware of the international facet to the occupation.

Just because it worked with japan doesn't mean the afghanis appreciate it. The worldwide hate club just keeps pouring in. This is just going in circles.

relative to size europe is doing just as good.

and it's takes two to tango, we may be selling them, but you're also buying them

"We" are doing the same thing the Iraqi and Afghan military are doing just on a larger scale...backed by both emerging tentative governments.
People seem to ignore that bit...
I don't need to get too pedantic about this do I?

I'll remind everybody who is reading this I said: Yes to withdrawing from Afghanistan. Just sayin'
