The argument for unrestrained gun ownership in America is absurd. The gun-nut arguments are wrong on so many levels and adorned with absolute lies. I was going to refute all those crazy ideas but decided to save my energy. Arguing with insanity is not very productive.

From a legalistic standpoint:
It's a violation of Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which I wholeheartedly support.

From a moral standpoint:
'When threatened, all beings fear for their lives; life is precious to all. Therefore, putting ourselves in the place of another, we do not kill, nor cause others to kill.' (Dhammapada 130)
We have repeatedly and conclusively demonstrated that we as a species are wholly incapable of administering the death penalty equitably; free of racial, ethnic, religious, and other bias.

From a philosophical standpoint:
It assumes that the convicted is static and unchanging, when all phenomena are dynamic and constantly changing. Who you are executing is not the same person who committed the crime.
Someone who has been disarmed, subdued, shackled, and imprisoned does not represent an existential threat. Killing the defenseless is murder, regardless of the imprimatur of the State.

From a practical standpoint:
We can never fully eliminate the possibility that we will murder an innocent person who's been wrongfully convicted.
There is no deterrent effect. The death penalty has been shown to have no measurable effect on crime.

From an economic standpoint:
In the U.S., administering the death penalty costs more than incarceration.

If you're going to take someone's life you better be willing to forfeit your own. Like my mom used to say, if you're gonna dish it out, you better be ready to take.

 

Sure--kidnapping, torturing, fucking a little kid , strangling her/him afterwards and dumping her/his body somewhere is just fine. I say let them live so that they can enjoy prison life with the drugs, food , medical care for 30--40 years is the proper thing to do. The parents will get over their loss--they just have to toughen up.


Edit: If anyone harmed my children or grandchildren in the way some of these psychos do--my job--MY ONLY JOB IN LIFE THEREAFTER---would be to find and kill the motherfucker. I swear this to be true.

 

I think that penalty of death only sort of works as a deterrent. Though grotesque, if we're going to do that maybe there ought to be emphasis on it; in school & on television.

Whatever we're doing now doesn't seem to be working very effectively.
