Because at the present time in the US prison system, they usually aren't. Officials say that it's not necessary. But when they say that, they usually secretly hope that they'll be abused. I realize it is a very emotional issue. And I'll tell you about my evolution of views, on the topic. When I was younger, I used to secretly hope that such people would be abused in prison. But as I got older, I realized that that really doesn't accomplish anything, and is self defeating in the end. I was just reading an article on the internet. In Medieval France, treason was the ultimate crime and sin. And people who committed this crime (typically subjects who hurt their king), had their flesh torn off with hot pokers, and then had molten lead poured into their gaping wounds. But we don't justify that anymore. Thoughts ?
Maybe a tattoo on the forehead--CHILD MOLESTER in big red letters. I don't think that it would take too long for ALL those attracted to children to learn how the public would react to that and choose another outlet for their sexual proclivities. (Joke--I don't know--maybe yes--maybe no. But when I read about some dirty son of a bitch raping a two year old or any young age -----) My suggestion would be after an act against a child----and a conviction.
Then we can proactively arrest pregnant women who might be contemplating abortion,or people who might harbor someone undocumented, or is considering having Gay sex...or someone who might vote Democratic. Do you really want to give the State that kind of power?
The idea of putting anyone in protective custody, “Pedophile” etc is taken seriously by the Correction Staff, The idea of signaling some out can be very dangerous to that individual. Usually anyone that is put in protective custody, is in danger from the other inmates…..They will ask for protection. Being a child predator, etc. in a correctional facility can be very dangerous. The information as to why someone is incarcerated is kept private, unless the individual is talking about the crimes committed, it can be very difficult to find the information, even the officers do not have access to this information. Yet with the ability to find most anything on the internet about someone is a very real possibility. All it takes is a phone call home to have a internet search. “There are no secrets in jail” is a very real and accurate saying.
My cousin spent five years in prison for molesting his step-daughter. He was kept in gen pop. He never had issues for being a pedophile. Unfortunately. I have no sympathy for anyone that would hurt a child. Keep them all in protective custody. It’s the worst place to be in prison. Locked in a cell for 23 hours/day. It’s where they belong.
Unfortunately this is not always the case, they are usually just kept separated from the general population, Not everyone that is in prison is locked in a cell, many prisons keep the population in a dormitory style setting, they walk around freely in the housing unit/dormitory. They walk to programs/school, recreation, mess hall etc. as a group.
You do realize that it's not "special treatment". Anyone who is at risk in the general population should qualify for protective custody. I should also point out about prison reform, like around two hundred years ago. I'm sure that a lot of people who were horribly abused back then got what they deserved too. What, you think there were nice people in prison then ? True reform only comes when we put aside our hatreds, and need for revenge .
The for the individual to reform, will only occur when the inmate changes their ways from a life of criminal activity. Fake it to make it, is a life style for many that are incarcerated.
