I have been to jail, more than once. I have been to jail with dreadlocks and refused to let them cut my hair on religious grounds and got away with my hair.

I have been to court with dreads many times and got off.

My opinion is what gets you off or in jail is one of two things. Either the judge has a preconception of some kind (either an agreement with the prosecutor, which is common, and has nothing to do with your hair, or he has a preconception of the crime, and always gives time to the crime) or the judge rules on HOW YOU ACT IN COURT.
I think that if you go in to court and stand up straight and look at the judge and the cops, and just calm down and say simple nice clear things you will do well as can be expected. I have been to court covered with dirt and sweat, and got off. I just stand up straight and talk sense.

It is my opinion that going to jail for 180 days is better than 3+ years of probation. I would be lucky to pull off three years of probation. Most folks i know get busted for a piss before that is over, and end up worse in the end.

And duh, Dreadlocks are not just hair. I will cut mine every few years, just because it is too long, so i cut it off, with the scissors and a girl. Nevertheless, i would not cut my hair just 'cause i thought i might get three years probation instead of 180 days in jail.
If you would cut your dreads just because of a maybe and a cop, cut them. Then don't grow them back, 'cause you don't get it anyway.
They call them DREADlocks because THEY are afraid of YOU. It's not because the rasta is afraid of the cops.

I say cut some only, and share them with folks who have no dreads.
