So I finally got around to buying a copy of Tago Mago and listened to it in it's entirety a few times without interruption at various volumes. Have mixed feelings about it, and ultimately do not have a solid opinion of it in favor nor against. The biggest disappointment for me was the nearness to perfection which is almost reached shortly into the sole song on the B side, a state of groove that comes so close to being perfect and within a few bars is lost and then never attained again, though an attempt at exploring the same does arise toward the end (albeit buried deep down in the mix); the most curious thing about this is that it's primarily Czukay who takes it in that direction, and you'd think with him editing it would have been realized, but perhaps he was going for the 'tease' effect. At any rate the hypnotic effect of the perpetuated groove was entirely lost to me on just the second listening, and the knowledge of what could have been compared to what is practically ruins the song for me.

First two tracks are quality, Peking O is atrocious, Aumgn is decent and the final song is possibly the best on the album, although I wouldn't say melodically or purely 'musically' but for the reason that it genuinely billows, headphones or not, like the dying off a heavy thunderstorm just passed. I tried to enter into the album with the expectations of a hyped masterpiece aside, but couldn't help recalling the opinions and reviews when reflecting on it afterwards and have to accept that I can only respect this record (and this band, for that matter, Schmidt and Czukay aside) from a distance as the beauty in this form and style was largely lost to me a long time ago. If I'm going to be my typical negative self, I'll say "at least it's a thousand times better than Neu!", but it does have it's genuine moments of innovative profundity, so I'll be cheerful about it instead.
