Share a song

That's one of the few songs I actually like by them, the Alice Practice EP I thought was great; too bad this single didn't see a 12" release (as far as I'm aware). The cover art of the former was wonderful.

James Joyce is also one of my heroes, so the song appeals to me for quoting his work, but the music is also great.

I agree we should keep posting what the song means to us or why we like it as it adds context. That's what made this thread interesting and different. Otherwise it's just a thread I avoid.

It's late 1974, and after a long drive to San Diego with of all people my mom and dad, I finally got away and made my way to the floor where I, a young kid of 13, shared joints with any and all as they were passed around. One guy about 30 said to stick with him and he'll make sure I don't get trampled. So after a while the lights go down and the arena grew silent. The faintest wisps of light, a deep royal purple, slowly reveal a stage covered in a thick fog.
As the lights begin to slowly illuminate the stage the silhouette of a grand piano appears as a lone, slightly hunched figure seated at it's keys begins to play.........

I rushed into the house after a trip to Licorice Pizza with my mother (a rock fan that would have put most in this thread to shame) with my latest acquisition in hand.
I go into the living room and hurriedly rip off the cellophane and enjoy that whiff of fresh vinyl, heavenly.
I cue up the black platter, don the huge headphones, and settle into the recliner to sample this latest collection of sounds. A quick glance over at my Dad to receive his half disapproving scowl, a scowl I only had to endure but a few short months longer until he left for a new job and decided to not return home.

I closed my eyes and was treated to an arrangement of sounds and words that burrowed deep down into my 14 year old soul.
There it was!
All my emotions and teen angst, the anonymity and invisibility I often felt amongst my own family, the rage and tears, the hopes and fears.
How? I asked myself, How do they know my soul so well?

Speaking of the Who, I really love Pete Townshend's Empty Glass album. Sure it borders on AOR at times, and it features the god awful 'Let My Love Open the Door', but there are some really excellent songs on here, and the production is quite nice.
