Actually, I'm shocked when I hear the n-word now, even though I grew up in the south and heard it all the way through. To me, it instantly marks the speaker as a redneck. Here, redneck is a commonly-used reference to a certain type of working-class white people. It can carry no negative meaning at all or be very negative, depending on the circumstances...and I definitely used it in a negative way in describing the gun incident a few posts back. Actually, lots of them take pride in the term and associated culture. But, if you don't like it, you don't like it.
What about rappers? Mostly, the rap music I occaisionally hear is littered with the N word. Not, you understand, that I am a devotee of rap. (in fact I can't stand it) I guess it's ok when people of African origin use the word themselves. Probably, there are rednecks who think of themselves as rednecks, and doubtless they're proud of the fact.
Rap is abominable; it's terrible to see it so popular with young kids right now. Some blacks use the n-word among themselves and and if they say "hey, n....r" to a white person, it means they like and have accepted them. Yes, there are proud rednecks, as well as upwardly-mobile ones who would be deeply offended to called such. The most purely negative terms for poor southern whites are "white trash" or "trailer trash"...using one of these terms implies inbreeding, mental deficiency, trans-generational poverty and welfare dependency, congenital criminality, laziness, incest, pederasty, alcoholism and addiction to stuff like crystal meth...you get the idea. There's a huge difference between these folks and rednecks...rednecks are crude, uncultured, bigoted, and marginally educated, but also hardworking and respectable citizens, surprisingly often of considerable means. Don't call a redneck "white trash" unless you want to get shot.
