The only problem with stores like Lane Bryant is that they're trendy... for adults. It's a great store for casual and business clothing for women, but "plus sized" teens don't really have much of anything. My best friend has the hardest time finding clothes that fit her and are still cute and attractive to a teenager. Her only choice in the area (which is an hour at least from her house on the totally opposite shore of the Island), basically, is Torrid, which still doesn't always have her size (she's a 26) and has more of a "punk" style (which she isn't into anymore). Its so wrong to essentially segregate women (and men!) based on their size. All body types are beautiful, and should be celebrated.

the thing is the same thing happens for super skinny people i'm a size 0 and have the hardest time finding pants that fit unless i want to go to the childrens section but then my butt doesnt fit in the pants so its a win-win situation for everyone as far as womens clothes go

I really don't think it's fair to call "women's sizes" "plus sizes." I'm technically a "plus size" at a size 14ish and I hate that so many stores and brands don't carry anything over a 12. For teenagers, it's hard to find attractive clothing that doesn't look professional or older. Torrid has a mildly large selection, but it's overpriced and cheaply made. I wish more stores would just carry more sizes and leave out the separation of "normal" and "plus."

WTF natural and healthy women come in all shapes and sizes. Why is it that when ppl console a woman of one size it is done by putting down women of the opposite size

Women with curves come in all sizes, even small sizes.
Women without curves also come in all sizes, even large sizes, I'm not counting rolling belly fat as curves.
Shape and size are NOT associated with one another.

Look I agree that sizing should be simplified and in actual inches.
I also agree that they should make attractive clothing in a wider range of sizes, esp. since larger women are making up a larger portion of the market.
But ppl please don't make assumptions about women of other sizes.

it is ridiculous to hammer on women who are naturally built very small. but the whole movement to get smaller and smaller is sickening. the only people i know who are naturally a size zero or less, and still healthy, eating normally and active, are 4'11".

Actually i got new school trousers the other week and they were too baggy for me. I tried a tonne on but they were too big in the butt area. But yeah i know it must be hard getting clothes, I saw a shop that i went in to (nice shop, nice clothes, nice price i think) but I left in like a min cos all the sizes were from 16+ so there are places albeit not many...

I heard an ad on the radio once that they were looking for "plus size models" size 10-12. WTF since when is a size 10 plus size?!. I used to model and gave it up because its so superficial, unfair, and WAY too stressful to stay that thin.
I have a similar problem with shoes instead of clothes. I have size 10 feet and its nearly impossible to find anything in my size. They either run out cuz they only get a few in my size it, or they don't order any at all! All I really wear is flip flops and one pair of sneakers (I'll wear them till they fall apart). Boo for mass produced stuff. I make all my own clothes :p

While Lane Bryant may be geared more for adults and not teens, one thing the store does have is pretty, sexy bras and panties. I prefer the pretty ones because the utilitarian bras are so ugly and if I listen closely I can hear them whisper "big saggy tits."

Fashion Bug has a good selection of larger sizes and the clothes seem geared more for the younger crowd.

Torrid is pretty good, though their selection, while contemporary and rather hip, is small. Torrid is an off shoot of Hot Topic.

My pet peeve is entire outfits or, in the case of lingerie, matched sets. I bought a camisole, not realizing that it came with a thong. My butt is no where near as big as my bust; there I have a pretty camisole that fits in all the right places and a thong with which I could bungee jump. The assumption on the part of marketing is that if one is big, one is big all over. When I was a teen, I'd wear a size 16 top and size 10 jeans. Now I wear a size 22 top and size 16 in pants.

come to think of it, why don't they stop pulling their punches and label clothes the way they actually think of women? Bones, Scrawny, Plump, Fat Cow, Elephant, Whale ... such honesty of opinion might be refreshing but alas, I doubt anyone would admit to wearing elephant size.

Then on a whole other scale, there are us tweeners- the people who don't quite fit into "regular" sizes, but specialty plus sized stores are too large. I have to buy literally everything I own because they stock sizes 0-20 as regular sizes, in addition to having a separate plus size section online that goes up to 3 or 4X. Lane Bryant is too adultish and Torrid is absolutely not my style, so I've never really had any options because I'm always in between.

I'm also with LostLass- I'm VERY apple shaped and have unproportionate arms. So, with Old Navy for example, I wear a size large/12 or 14 pants but XL/XXL/18 top half the time. I don't often buy sets, but would like to if not for my body being ridiculous.

And losing weight is easier said than done. Every time I've lost a significant amount of weight, I was immediately diagnosed with something and gained all the weight back while trying to get the condition under control. Over the summer I lost 25 pounds but then was diagnosed with celiac disease and forced to add back foods so I would get some starch, and gained it all back. 3rd time this has happened :p I'm not a normal case, but still... it happens.

i wont buy anything thats bigger than a medium in juniors. buying a large makes me feel huge for some reason -i know im not big (im a 6) but it still bothers me. i tend not to care about jeans as much because my size varies from brand to brand and i have big hips and a butt. im usually a 7long now in juniors. also im tall and all legs so even finding jeans long enough is a pain.

ill have to rethink my original rant since LostLass seems to have taken my thoughts thank you for the refreshing size names

i hate seeing girls try & slim down & down & down til theyre unhealthy b/c naturally theyre just bigger built. im on the smaller side at 5'8'' so i find clothing size hard to find for a different reason. if you want we'll start callin your sizes voluptuous. either way it always seems like battle of the sizes look around its the oldest thing in the book ''were all different''

i say this all the time, too- i get so angry.
i'm a beautiful size 18, but most stores carry such...dumpy clothes for such a lovely size;/.
they're all either tagged wrong and fit horribly, have no style to them of ANY sort, or are very uncomfortable. a lot of times, all 3!!
    it's insane!
but, you knooow, there ARE plus sized stores that have REALLY amazing clothes in 'em, like Torrid.

Ummmmm. I don't think that's sexist at all. More like... weightist. Men have entire stores dedicated just to "large men". And women have the "plus sized section." Where's the sexism there? Oh, I guess now you'll say that it's "sexist" that men have an entire store for big sizes, but women only get some crappy section in a store? Well I'm sorry they conveniently made your own section in a store and you don't have to drive an extra 30 miles to find the store with larger sizes. BTW women do have their own stores for plus sizes. I think Torrid is one of them.

And are you actually saying the politically correct term, "plus size", is sexist? Would you rather people said "fat chick apparel"?

Why not just lose the weight. It's unhealthy anyway. Obviously you have some self-esteem issue with your image, otherwise you wouldn't be in such a tivvy over it.

    Hahah score.

I can understand the frustration you might feel; "plus size" does sound a bit offensive. Sexist though, not sure I understand that take on it? But really, what would be the proper way to label larger sizes that wouldn't be offensive? I've racked my brain to think of one, but I would say most anything insinuating that the woman is not thin would be offensive to her. Unless she has confidence in herself and her body. Obviously if it bothers the person, there are deeper issues involved, perhaps frustration over her size, not wanting to be reminded of something she knows is painfully obvious to her?

However, I could say the same about the petite departments at stores on the subject of lack of selection. I'm about 5'3", and I wear between a 4-6 in US sizes, but do you know how difficult it is to find clothing with a proper fit? Pants/dresses/skirts that don't drag across the ground? Capri pants, it's nearly impossible to find a pair for my short legs that don't end up appearing to be regular length pants. The selection for petites is almost laughable at the department stores. Why is it that there doesn't seem to be as much of a market for clothing to fit the female populace who lacks in height? I know there are quite a few of us out there. [IMG]

ive always had problems finding clothes that were long enuoph arm length leg length ect, im tall 5'11" and ive always had a bad time finding clothes that fit me well, now my mum is a plus size and whenever we go shopping together we both have a hard time fiding clothes that fit ! me for my reason her for hers, but she has a lot more trouble then i do and it always seems that clothes for plus sizes are not as nice or ffacny and the regular ones and i dont think thats fair at all! i mean women are women no matter what size they are and some plus size might like what some smaller sized ones may like and they deserve to be able to get those clothes no matter what size they are! its unfair when my mum asks do you have this in ....whatever size she is and they say no, and show her some ugly gnarly thing that no one would want to wear, it hurts to see how it makes her sad that she is treated differently because of her size! :(

I feel that same way about shopping. I like a lot of the clothes that I see in the "juniors" section, but a lot of them are made so sleezy these days... finding a pair of shorts at Wal*Mart was a man hunt. haha At the same time I don't want a pair that comes down to my knees or makes me look 30.

Yes I'm a mother, but jeeze do I need to look and dress like one too? haha

My problem is I have bigger hips and butt, and my legs are a bit longer. Finding the right jeans is almost like finding the right man.

It seems like the styles sort of switch between body types, I usually go into one shoppe and if they don't have anything that fits properly I just head over to Value Village or some other used clothing place that has clothes from when my shape was "in". They have a big long rack of each kind of clothing starting at whatever the smallest size they have is and it just goes up until they run out of sizes. Kinda cool but if every store was like that someone would probably complain that they feel self conscious shopping alongside someone at the other end of the rack. You just can't please everyone.

Yea, it wouldn't bother me, but I'm sure that someone who is more of a plus sized woman would be.

I'm sure stores only see "how can I profit" then "how comfortable are our guests feeling shopping".

    :shrugs:
