Yeah, and then the government is required by law to charge you. Then you go to court and either a judge or a jury of peers decides if you are innocent or guilty.

If there is nothing to charge you with, they have to let you go.

There is a huge difference here. They can now arrest you without charge, hold you indefinitely, and never give you a trial.

This essentially gives the government power to come whisk people away in the night for no reason. no reason at all.

I don't mean to be an alarmist, but there is a reason this is passed. The senate wouldn't pass a bill like this unless they planned to use it. There is also a reason they didn't add an amendment that would protect american citizens. They plan to use this not only on suspected "terrorists" but ....anyone. Basically.

....They don't need one, it's in the text of the bill, unless I'm mistaken. American citizens and lawful resident aliens are exempt.

I personally see it as more of a thing to target mexicans or other non-trouble-making illegals who are here to work, not blow things up. Or at least, to get votes on the basis of targeting them, even if that's now how it's used.

If you're not an american citizen or a lawful alien, you can be locked up forever by the military..... who I'm pretty sure the boarder patrol are a part of? Anyway, it's to scare the living shit out of mexicans.

Not that this makes it much better, but I'm just saying, it doesn't apply to you if you're a citizen. Infowars are pretty well known for being verrrrrry paranoid and reactionary. They might be right, on the whole, that things are sinister, but they still make them much more sinister than they really are.

Of course, it's not a big deal to add a rider that nobody even sees to another bill to remove the citizen exemption clause. But then you're running into habeas corpus issues up the ass. Of course we don't seem to have much in the way of habeas corpus anymore anyway, but there's still that idea and constitutional mandate, which prevents anything like that from being used on a very large scale without serious problems.

"…provisions in latest Defense Authorization Act that would authorize the President of the United States to arrest and detain indefinitely, without charges or trial, people suspected of being enemies, or linked to enemies of the United States."

Do you mean that the president would actually single me out and come to my house and arrest me personally? How cool would that Be? I had no idea that he was all that interested in me, personally.

This is so unconstitutional that I can only hope it won't stand. I think Obama will veto it. Every Senator has sworn to uphold the constitution but they are not taking it seriously.

No! Not now. Obama would have to sign it and I don't think he will.

So all they have to do is rewrite it and there's no problem..... for them. Problems for everybody else though.

I did read Obama plans to veto it so we are good for another year or so...... After that all hell could break loose.

What do you think that they did to all of the Japanese Americans during World War II ?

They put them all in prison camps without any do process.

The U.S. Air Force has been making people disappear, usually permanently, since the forties. At one point, I even talked with a friend of mine who is ex-Air Force, about it in depth. He thinks that it's funny, and just laughed about it all. "Who's going to do anything about it, if they don't know about it in the first place." "We have the power." The guy is sadistic.

I think that you folks should consider reading more often. Research can even become a paying occupation.

If the statute of limitations has not run out, we should probably demand the arrest of the man who said the following:

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... What country before ever existed a century and half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.

    Thomas Jefferson
Letter to William Stephens Smith (13 November 1787), quoted in Padover's Jefferson On Democracy

Its not in the text of the bill. The bill authorizes the arrest and indefinite detainment of anyone, including american citizens who are perceived to be an enemy of the United States. United States meaning, of course, the government and not the citizens who actually constitute the United States.

Obama did say he would veto it. Lets hope he does.
