I wonder if that means that most people are using an incorrect phrase out there, or if it's a few people and just you.
Pardon? Oh I understand you rounded up. 1,720:7,550 is a 1.7:7.5 ratio. Rounded up, that would be a 2:8 or 1:4. Which is roughly 4 times, yes!! Thanks.
Do i need to point out why that does not prove your point? ok. The following returns would count in your search: "sports and semantics are not the same thing" "semantics and politics are important subjects to study" "The Semantics are a shitty band" The basic logic behind your search is ridiculous. Semantics, by the way, is often taught alongside logic, so both would do you good. why don't you just go to the philosophy department, since you are a "student of language", and ask them?
Were we not arguing that the use of "semantics is important" is incorrect? Why don't you go to the Yale Library and ask the Librarian since you have a card there?
Semantics is the general study of meaning. If you were referring to the actual study of semantics, it would be semantics IS important. Just like history is important, etc. Semantics is also the plural word of semantic (singular), so in that plural context of referring to semantics in the form of say a discussion (arguing over semantics -- i.e. the meaning of certain words), it would not be improper to say semantics ARE important. For instance, if you look up the word semantics you get... Linguistics. The study or science of meaning in language. Linguistics. The study of relationships between signs and symbols and what they represent. Also called semasiology. The meaning or the interpretation of a word, sentence, or other language form: We're basically agreed; let's not quibble over semantics. Look up the word semantic (singular) and you get... Of or relating to meaning, especially meaning in language. Of, relating to, or according to the science of semantics.
Good question. I suggest that maryjohn review the terms and conditions of the Politics Forum before creating any future posts.
LOL, it doesn't, it has to do with someone basically saying that, since the average IQ is 100, and the majority of people have an IQ between 90 and 110, the political views of the majority should be ignored.
Why, I thought you would never ask. Thanks wacky. I started this thread in response to your dismissive attitude towards semantics. Or rather, to your attempts to use twisted semantics to try to deceive others into believing what you would like to have them believe. The more we learn how words can control, the better we are at spotting the pig beneath the lipstick. Or the beautiful woman under the beard, for that matter. Thus, semantics is important.
