Yes. I was disappointed in myself for that last bit and in my failure to ignore my annoyance and to simply continue with the topic at hand. I engaged in the very behavior that I find so distasteful.

In calm hindsight, I will not apologize or retract it. I believe, though it was an unkind statement and reflects very poorly on myself, it was accurate and needed to be said.

 

Please look up a few maps depicting the number and location of US military installations around the word. There are many ones available online.

Now, can we try a little thought exercise? Let’s imagine you were a leader, or even just an average citizen of Russia. You look at this map of the military installations, surrounding your country, of a single foreign country that is located on the other side of the world, on another continent. What would you make of it?

The ends justify the means? The interpretation by the early courts that allowed the explosion in federal power and regulation are the fundamental issue for me. The fact that some of those powers were used for some beneficial results does not negate the distortion of the original intent of the clause and the expanding federal power.

How could anyone here whose neither Russian nor a Russian leader possibly answer such a hypothesis with any meaningful or enlightening?
However if that is a way that America looks on measuring stuff it's no wonder calculations go wrong.

The Russian people aren't stupid. To think they are would be an error of judgement.
They know where they are threatened from and its within their own border.
I suggest the clampdown by the Russian state on its citizens and the eradication of anyone who opposes Putin is symptomatic of his fear of being deposed.

Eventually, I think and hope he will fall.
Let's not forget the Russian people liked Glaznost and Perestroika so it's very likely they are keeping their heads down until is may be prudent to rise up.
And I also think, Nevalny was taken out because he was an actual serious threat to Putin's leadership, and not just an opponent.

The US doesn’t annex anymore. We bribe or clandestinely overthrow leaders and governments we don’t like. We sanction them and their industries severely. We fund their opposition parties. If none of the above are sufficient, we make the determination that they have committed “crimes against humanity” and we send in troops to “save democracy”.

 

This view seems to favor the narrative that supports our side just a little too cleanly for me. Not saying it’s not true. I just don’t think it captures enough of the picture.
