How do I know? Because I work closely with law enforcement. So what? The SRO stayed outsude as the shooting happened. Law enforcement in the state of Florida and most other states are trained first on scene, first to engage. Doesn't matter if you have backup or not. The SRO was on the force for 30 years if I'm not mistaken and he was most likely put in that position becayse he was too old to work the streets.

Yeah. When I went through the police academy, out of the whole six months I've gone through it, they only dedicated 4 days to force on force scenarios like active shooter. It really isn't all that hard to win in an active shooter event especially if you decide to shelter in place as a staff member. You can find most of the stuff we were trained on online.

If expens is the issue, then allow teachers who want to be armed to carry. Looking online, I found reputable training classes for civilians that only cost around $300 per person. And what they teach is basically what they taught me in the academy.

1. No doubt, in hindsight, more could have been done.
But I will point out this section from your link:

Florida’s current law governing written threats to kill or inflict bodily harm does have limits.

Case in point: Back in 2015, police arrested a teenager at Sarasota High who sent a series of public tweets that included “can’t WAIT to shoot up my school” and “school getting shot up Tuesday,” as well as an apology saying it was a joke.

An out-of-town watchdog group discovered the tweets and notified police, who rushed to the school to protect students. The boy was judged “delinquent” in juvenile court.

But an appeals court threw out the case in 2016, saying the law allowed only for a threat to a “specific victim or member of that person’s family.”

“Our efforts have been frustrated by current law, which covers threats directed towards individuals not institutions such as schools,” Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle wrote to Florida lawmakers two days after the Parkland shooting in a letter supporting the broadening of the law.

A proposed bill in Florida’s Legislature would, if passed, strike the “specific victim” wording in the law.

“Now is the time to amend the statute and give law enforcement the tools to ensure that no child feels unsafe at school because of online threats,” she wrote.

Here's another side to the story.

Stanford Law Professor John Donohue says he’s been “unhappy” with the criticism of Israel’s department and the FBI, and tells PEOPLE the backlash is “part of an NRA campaign to say police all screwed up, therefore you need your guns because you can’t count on the police for anything.”

Every complaint against law enforcement in the wake of the school slayings, according to Donohue, stems from actions he says were taken by the NRA.

“[The suspect] represented what the NRA has always said is the law-abiding citizen: He’d never committed a felony and was never institutionalized,” Donohue says. “It seems the NRA has created this situation that makes it incredibly difficult to get someone on the prohibited purchase list and prevents deeper background checks. In any other industrialized nation, had that guy gone in with that background to buy a gun, he would never have been able to buy a gun, let alone an assault rifle.”

2. So you may be mistaken? Or you're convinced this guy was too old for service and a troublemaker?
3. Well that solves the whole problem. 4 days of training and everything's fine. Is that how long swat teams and Navy Seals train? So, introduce an additional 718,000 guns into our schools at a cost of $718 million to $1 billion dollars, give them four days training (good for the next 35 years) and that's it!
5/6. $300 times 718,000 (Trump's 20%) = $215,400,000. That's one training session. You don't think we'd need follow up training, some teachers work for over 35 years? When I taught I was required to amass a certain number of credits every year I was employed just to keep my instructional license, let alone a license to kill. Plus you left out insurance both personal and district, law fees, ammunition, weapon cost, storage, record keeping, drills, medical bills, etc.
When I coached we spent days, months, and years in training just to become competent in a sport, and you want 4 days to kill someone. No wonder the police screw up.

The reason why they should be excluded is because suicide rates aren't dependant on the rate of gun ownership. Japan has virtually no privately owned guns and they have a higher suicide rate than we do. When Australia implemented it's mandatory buy back program, suicide by firearms were replaced by suicide by others means. The overall suicide rate hardly changed.

Local laws do not prove the stat wrong. Nothing is stopping people in jurisdictions with strict gun control from driving 50 miles down the road to buy a gun.

Actually there is. It's against federal law to buy a gun from another state directly. If you want to buy a gun from another state, the FFL from the other state must send the firearm to the FFL in your state where you have to go through a background check. The firearm must comply with your state laws otherwise it's no deal. Even private sellers can't sell to anyone outside the state.

I may be mistaken about how long he was on. I know he was om the force for a long time and was on his way to retirement.

You don't have to be a SWAT officer to hold in place and point a gun at the door. In fact modern police training is when shots are being fired, you don't wait for SWAT. And really, the shooter usually isn't some former SEAL either. He's usually some untrained punk with low self esteem and usually either ends himsef, run, or surrender when confronted by armed resistence.

The reason why it takes 4 days is because the material taught is rather simple. Day one will be focused on the legal and moral aspect, and the rest of the days will be for force on force scenarios.
