After many months of American inaction, Putin is taking charge of the situation in Syria. Massive airstrikes today.

Too little, too late me thinks.

On the other hand, I don't think this can be solved for many years to come. There are busloads of different ethnic and religious groups who all hate each others guts. A good part of the middle east is living in the 15th century. There is no way you can solve this with a couple of bombs.

The soviets went to Afghanistan and the US went to Iraq. We all know the success rate of that stuff.

Just when Assad's military was crumbling. A loyal ally.

so if Putin is backing Assad, does that mean he is bombing the US backed rebel forces?

Not on purpose, as Russia claims to be mainly in it to help Assad fight IS, not every other enemy he has. But depending where the free syrian army or any other rebel forces are they could take a russian bombing. And it is likely Russia would not see any big issue with such accidents (as they would officially be labeled).

I stopped being lazy and read the news. According to the article I read, Russia is officially targeting IS like you said but according to "a US official and other officials" (whoever the f that means), Russia is purposely targeting opposition groups fighting the Syrian government.

    well, this should end well.

Nobody does. That shit happens all the time. Even with precision drones worth millions of dollars.

I have not yet heard or read of Russian air forces targeting syrian opposition groups myself, but that doesn't say much. It could be true. I agree with 'whoever the fuck that means', unless it gets verified it is not smart to rely on rumours.

Just because such bombings happen more often doesn't mean nobody sees it as no big issue! Besides the opponents of Assad obviously see it as a big deal I reckon those who support those opponents also are concerned about such happenings.

Dude you need get off the fence and stop nit-picking everything to pieces. When I say that nobody gives a shit it means that each time it happens the country responsible doesn't give a shit and downplays the whole thing or buries it outright.

And please don't tell me you didn't know what I meant.

mass civilian casualities are a given with the US and Russia involved because neither country wants to commit ground troops so bombing from the air is really the only option

I really doubt that counts for any country involved. If dutch air forces would bomb on other opponents of Assad than IS I can assure you it would be perceived as a big issue. I think the same counts for US air forces? In fact, I think one of the few countries such lack of concern might actually ring true for is Russia. Maybe some other countries like Iran as well (since it seems they do not dig any sunni soldier).

    Wikipedia:

    logs[edit]

Classified US military documents released by WikiLeaks in October 2010, record Iraqi and Coalition military deaths between January 2004 and December 2009.[3][7][8][9][14][14][15] The documents record 109,032 deaths broken down into "Civilian" (66,081 deaths), "Host Nation" (15,196 deaths),"Enemy" (23,984 deaths), and "Friendly" (3,771 deaths).[11][16]

And that was definitely a war featuring ground troops.

Dude, dream on. Everyone who's been in a war will tell you that when the shit hits the fan everyone gets splashed. The only people who don't don't understand this are ignorant politicians talking about "surgical strikes". There is no such thing.

    Dutch air force? They exist?

Sorry, just messing with you .... couldn't help it.

They're small but fine ;) So far most countries that have helped bombing IS have done so only on Iraq ground. The netherlands (among others) are on the brink of bombing on Syrian ground as well. I noticed Australia has also decided to bomb IS on syrian grounds.

not many people gave a shit about civilian casualties during the Iraq war. I mean, some people certainly did but they (me) were ridiculed as bleeding heart liberals.

also, theghost, I wasn't saying a large number of civilian casualties dont happen with ground troops...just saying its a given when you're mostly fighting from the air.

Russia are bombing anti Assad rebels, not ISIL, which include al-Qaeda groups

Which is why the west wont really do anything

Kick up too much of a stink, looks like they are protecting al-Qaeda

    Syria is a mess
