There is an interesting story about the developmentally disabled. I guess you could call it something related to their status and rights. Back in the Middle Ages and early modern period, rulers were often mentally retarded. This was probably due to inbreeding. And since they wanted to keep the power in their family, they often had to settle on whoever was available to fill the position of power. For example, Charles II of Spain (1661–1700) was an only child. Again probably due to inbreeding, he was developmentally disabled. It also left him with a horrible face deformity. Royal pictures were meant to be flattering. But even they couldn't hide his protruding jaw. This is not to say that the developmentally disabled and others had it good in those days. Most were usually beggars or confined to insane asylums.
