when i am offered meat that someone else has purchased and prepared

    i always eat it

    [religious speculation follows]

it is not my karma at that point, but turning down offered food IS my karma

i like to humorously point out afterwards that i am a vegetarian . . .

mrs wica does but she is not really a vegetarian

[though food prices have temporarily won her over]

^^ so how can do you consider yourself vegetarian if you always eat meat offered to you by someone else? isn't the term vegetarian based on the fact of not eating meat? i think i'm confused.

    yes it is

for me what is important is not so much eating

i am sure every time i go outside i eat a handful of flying insects

not to mention what i carelessly step on, or what's ground up with my flour

[basically i am more buddhist than jainist]

i try to be knowingly responsible for what i create

i will not give money for the purpose of killing animals or for the benefit of those that have

[money being the only accepted moral compass in the u$a]

btw, most people know me well enough to point out any available alternatives to the endless pile of death that is eastern montana cuisine

[show me the endless pile of potatoes!]

I am a vegetarian to try to save animals and cause less destruction in the world..

But I eat meat if it means that there will be less death then eating vegetarian. Right now I eat meat because in the climate I live (The western U.S.) a vegetarian diet would cause much more damage to the environment then a meat diet.

If I go out and buy tofu I am clear cutting the tropical rain forest, that has thousands of life forms in a few square meters.

The beef I get is raised on the plains near me and I know the environment and what damage it is doing. I figure each cow displaces a few prairie dogs and this time of year a few nesting birds it also has a chain effect on the predator animals such as red tail hawks and coyotes.

But I think the beef is much less death and destruction then trying to import a protein source from a clear-cut tropical forest.

Around here, most people (including my own father) raise cattle the old fashioned way - they wander fields and eat grass to their heart's content until they're fat enough to slaughter. There's relatively little negative impact (aside from methane and some stream pollution) to the environment.

My dad treats his cows almost like pets, which is, ironically, one of the reasons I stopped eating them. They have names, and they come when he calls. I've bottle fed some of his cows when they were just calves, named them, petted them, laughed while they skipped around and played with each other . . . I could never have eaten them!

I just can't eat meat anymore. I can't see a hamburger, chicken sandwich, whatever, without seeing the animal it came from. Yeah, chickens aren't exactly smart or cuddly, but I prefer my food to not have been conscious at all before it was cooked. I would probably be sick just at the texture of it in my mouth (just the thought makes me nauseous).

Used to some times I gt hassled, but it wore off. Been veg for 2 years! people used to shove meat in my face, tell me I wasnt going to get nutrition, i was unhealthy, wouldnt (sometimes still wont) cook for me when i go to peoples houses. some of the more ignorante people got a tounge lashing, others just realized that it didnt bother me and it got tired. Mostly when I deal with people I just (only if the want to cook for me, or we are talking about food, do I bring up being a vegetarian) bring it up kindly just state the facts. some are suprised that Im not dead ask how long what evea. But if someone said yuck to tofu I wouldnt get pissed off some people dont like tofu. It may not have anything to do with your food choices.. chilll ;)

let the meat eaters be rude

[they are already responsible for so much carnage, what is a little rudeness?]

we should be as gracious as possible

[their guilt makes them hostile enough without fanning the flames]

i have had so many people who, when they find out i'm vegetarian, that it is no problem, because it is just chicken their serving, and chickens are vegetables... THATS NEWS TO ME! the first few times, i thought they were just kidding with me; but, there really are people out there in the world, who think chickens are vegetables! i have live around chickens, and chickens are vegetables, in the sense that they are dumb as fuck! however, they are not vegetables, in the same sense as carrots are vegetables. what do some people have in their heads for brains?

Hehe, that reminds me of the people who think fish and any other form of seafood are vegetables (there are people who do think that!). You really begin to wonder about how they were raised and/or their educational system to truly believe some animals are vegetables [IMG].

Oddly, I've never had any issues with my diet and comments. I think it's because, generally, people find me very intimidating in person. I have no idea why. Some sort of aura I project unconsciously.

I often have people apologizing to me for eating meat, or asking me if it's OK if they order meat. I mean, I don't care. It's just for some reason, people fear me, lol.

I think it's mainly because I'm an introvert and very difficult to read.

Denver Tofu, Zilgher. grown on the eastern plains, made in Denver. Available through King soopers for less than $1.50 in the metro, probably add 25 c outside that.

Cool I will have to try some out..

Right now I am enjoying some Bison steaks that are from a really good program. I forgot what it is called but they are from a genetically clean stock of “Certified American Buffalo”.

True American buffalo are almost extinct and the government programs are failing in saving them and bring them back from the brink of extinction. So some ranchers have started raising them and selling meat to support the effort in saving this important keystone in the North American eco foundation.

The only heard the government has help maintained has had cases of tuberculosis and could very well die and disappear.

So I have been enjoying some steaks and supporting the effort in trying to help the American buffalo from slipping into extinction.

But once all my American Buffalo steaks are gone I am going to be trying out Denver tofo.

I don’t know much about ranching but I guess most buffalo or bison is cross bread (kind of strange that a cow and bison could breed :-/).

But supposedly this “Certified American Buffalo” is a clean genetic stock form native buffalo and they have to have it tested and make sure it stays clean to keep the certification.

Not sure of all the details but I did look into the numbers of bison herds and it is dangerously low and the government programs are very weak. It think this could work to get the numbers up.

No factory farming is not what we are want just like we don’t want massive large-scale destructive agriculture.

Support your small local farmers and ranchers…

The money you spend supports what you spend it on.

But some large scale free roaming herds of buffalo would be nice..
Maybe restore some of the agriculture field used to feed export markets back into native prairie where the buffalo can be repopulated and roam free.

whee! I'm all about as local as you can go.
I'm also a supporter of bison on open prairie and foothills spaces.
There's a tract of land south of Highlands Ranch that would be PERFECT for a herd reintro, but the soon to be owner ( honking huge HOA) is not interested in that.
How do we know it is perfect? there's a small ranch herd across the southern border.

and the crosses are from AI.

my friends always make fun of me. Everytime we're throwing around insults (in jest) or I'm making fun of my friends Andy I always get the "Shut up, vegetarian" line. I think it's hilarious though because it's the dumbest thing to make fun of someone about
