...... Picks a fight with the Russian Black Sea fleet on their doorstep - not a brilliant idea is it ??? Russia ‘fires warning shots at Royal Navy destroyer’ Gavin Cordon 23 June 2021, 1:48 pm Russian forces fired “warning shots” at a Royal Navy destroyer after it entered the country’s territorial waters in the Black Sea, the Russian defence ministry has said. A border patrol boat fired warning shots at HMS Defender and a Su-24M warplane dropped four bombs, the defence ministry said in a statement reported by the Russian Interfax news agency. “The destroyer was warned in advance that weapons would be fired in case of a violation of the Russian state border. It disregarded the warning,” the statement said. “As a result of joint actions of the Black Sea Fleet and the Border Service of the Russian Federal Security Service, HMS Defender left the territorial sea of the Russian Federation.” The there was no immediate response to the statement from the Ministry of Defence (MoD). HMS Defender – a Type 45 destroyer – is part of the UK Carrier Strike Group currently heading to the Indo-Pacific region. However, it was announced earlier this month that it would be temporarily breaking away from the group to carry out its “own set of missions” in the Black Sea.
Could it be a ruse on the part of Boris Johnson to get more gullible tax payer money to pump up the naval defense expenditure ! Boris Johnson vows to make UK 'foremost naval power in Europe' with boost to defence budget
Of course they would deny it, that's bloody obvious, but there happens to be a BBC correspondent aboard the vessel and he too is reporting the incident. The Ministry of Defence (incidentally the boss of crew of HMS Defender) also admitted that shots were fired: A border patrol boat fired warning shots at HMS Defender and a Su-24M warplane dropped four bombs, the defence ministry said in a statement reported by the Russian Interfax news agency. What we could be a witness to is a re-run of the 19th Century Crimean War.
The BBC reporter says the ship was harassed by Russian ships and Planes. Any firing of missiles or bombs was at least 3 miles away ( even the Russians aren't that bad a shot ). The Navy was going through an area recognised as a commonly used and international recognised transit route. The area is off Crimea and is occupied by Russia but not recognised by any country. I personally would trust the Royal Navy over anything the Russians say
I know the Russians are very accurate, I was not that far away from Sakhalin Island when they downed the Korean 'jumbo'. what the Russians were doing was merely firing 'warning shots'. If they had really wanted to get 'serious' 'Defender' would now be at the bottom of the Black Sea.
The Russian were on exercises and are trying to be intimidating. They love to try to stir things up for no reason. As I have said I wouldn't trust anything the Russians say
Navy is a phenomenon that never ceases to astonish - even if they're being provocative. I find that the royal navy are actually just sailors, and like any sailor they swear and piss and make a pig of themselves but are overall seadogs with no motive to pull anything over. It's an interesting whimsical thing. It's sea-life - isn't it? They live on boats.
No matey, I'm not talking about the ordinary seamen here, I'm talking about the Captain and senior officers and their political masters in Whitehall.
