shocktreatment is an excellent movie in my humble opinion..... riff and magenta are a brother and sister doctor and nurse team. janet and brad are a couple with some typical marital issues who go to a tv studio for a day of excitement. Turns out that Brads twin brother owns the movie studio and while he is a startling success, he is jealous of the one thing that Brad does have....Janets love. So Farley, Brad's brother, has Brad committed to a "series" in which he receives "rest" in a rest home which in actuality serves as a prison. Under Farley's orders, Riff and Magenta use there doctor status due to there "series" to influence Janet. They get her down on Brad and make her think she much better than him, "A superstar". Then they tell Janet that it is her fault that Brad is a loser. Furthermore they tell her that she is obligated to be the biggest star she can be in order to reawaken Brads desires. Ofcourse in the process Janet gets swept up in narcissistic egomania and loses sight of her true feelings. And you guessed it, it happens on her own "tv spot" Little Nell Campbell playes the sexiest nurse I have ever seen in my life (and thats more sexy nurses and or sexy women in nurse costumes than you would believe Also Janets parents win a stay on a series called "happy homes" and there roles contribute some of the best stuff in the film. Mr Weiss plays a stereotypical Middle Aged American Father during the coldwar plagued 80s....... "a man should drive the car, fix a fuze, and tend a bar. A man should like his brow to be wet with sweat. And should know the right occasions, to indulge in tax evasions. A man should know the settings that his spark plugs get. Faggots are Maggots, Thanks God I'm A Man!" The musicals are much more 80s than RHPS but it still is rock n roll. The theme is more based on the changing values of the atomic family and how the viewing and judging of a person can easily be skewed by media and person to person manipulation. Plus of course the film is laced with plenty of anicdotal insights on all sorts of pyschological, emotional and physical human tendancies. I think it failed because it was A. a little less sexy and a little less rock n roll B. a little more campy and a little more cheesy / 80's C. no susan surranden (sp?) barry bostwick or tim curry I'm sure I've said enough and you can appreciate my conviction based on the length of my reply alone
Found a copy of Shock Treatment to order - had never heard of it before this thread - even though I am a big RHPS fan. Will let you know what I think when I have seen it - Thanks for letting me know about it.
Like trailer park boys started as, btw im an extra in one scene of the TPB movie comin out! love rocky horror
I got the copy of Shock Treatment. I liked it. Now, it is not RHPS part two, but it is good satire and the music and production is good. It also has that 90 degrees off center worldview that the original had. I think it is worth getting and watching.
Thanks for the review, Hippypaul. I'll see if I can dig myself a copy on my next trip to London. Biida and Obituary, have a great time!!!
I would have thought that with all that hair Frank would have a closer resemblance to Brian May from Queen rather than Freddie Marcury. I'm trying to remember if there was anyone with a moustache in Rocky Horror, but the only one I can think of is the Professor, and HE looked more like Harry Potter's fat uncle than Freddy. Hey, now there's an idea! A Harry Potter musical! OK, maybe not.
