lol, I tried this out yesterday and lasted about 5 seconds before I gave up. But I might try again when I am in a calmer mood but Pandy and Chaos I admire your patience and steady hand! They are beautiful. also pandy how did you make the water look like it did in your photos? What kind of camera, etc. i'd love to take pics like that but don't know how
lol I was actually getting pretty frustrated because after I had spent all my time trying to balance one, I would knock it all over trying to balance the third rock. Hoping to go to a beach or Meadowlilly conservation area sometime this summer and try it there. Maybe the calmer atmosphere will help
You can do it on any camera. if your camera allows you to, just reduce the shutter speed to like 1/2 or 1 second to blur the water. you might have to wait til later in the day so you don't have as much light so you do not over expose though. you will need a steady surface or tripod, as you do not want the camera to be moving at all. for my photographs of the blurred water, I used what's called a neutral density filter, which basically allows me to use slower shutter speeds in broad daylight without the color shifting.
Those pics are awesome! I used to make little men, i think they're called inukshooks, out of rocks. [nostalgia]Last summer I went on a sailing trip around vancouver with my grandpa. On his map he had a little circle marked out next to a cove and i asked him what it was. He told me that 35 years ago he had been to the cove, found a trail, followed it, and stumbled across a house. There was an austrian couple living there, completely cut off from the world. They made friends and drank beer and stuff and then my grandpa sailed away and for 35 years hes never seen them again. Soooooooooooo, on this trip we go back to the cove, follow the trail, and the house is still there. And all around the house (literally everywhere) are rock balancing sculptures. He had them climbing up trees, along branches, and he had a cement-less arch going over a tree stump. It was amazing. [/nostalgia]
I uploaded these rock balance photos to my photography website. They are a bit larger and better quality than the facebook pics:http://www.adpetersonphotography.com/portfolios/rock-balance/ also, check out my "Journal" section where you can subscribe to my RSS feed. I try to post a new photo every day!
my main Digital SLR is a Nikon D300, also have an old D70s that I converted to shoot only infrared. as far as film cameras go, I also have an ancient Mamiya 6 Rangefinder: a Ricohflex TLR: and a holga, of course:
haha thanks. i was at the lake and bored and those were the only rocks that were there so i thought i'd give it a try
ya, I do stuff like that if I find a bunch of suitable rocks in a secluded place. I like coming back and finding that someone has added to my little pile. I don't like coming back and finding that someone has ruined my pile but hey, shit happens
