Scruggs dies at 88 I probably saw Scruggs some 20 times or so, counting sit in sets with other players, and one campfire pick when I was too damn young to be savvy as to who was playing. I've seen a lot of banjo players. Earl was a damn fine picker.
RIP A great musician. Back in the sixties he was one of the "old timers" who bridged the age and political gap between young country musicians and the older ones. He helped the old school see that those long hairs were good musicians and good people. He didn't reject his son, he listened to him and, more importantly for music lovers, he played with his son and his son's friends. Thank you Earl.

Another legends moves on to the other side. Maybe him and Hendrix are doing a psychedelic version of Foggy Mountain Breakdown right now.
^^ unfortunately, its not going to happen that way. "So gather round and raise your pleasant voices And enjoy that gospel bluegrass while you live. It's hard to find a banjo player up in heaven There's some things even Jesus won't forgive" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVrhaYjyLVo BTW, I heard a rumor that Earl not only heard all of the jokes about banjo players, he wrote 62% of them. (How does one create a link to youtube, without imbedding a viewer)
LOL, true. Perfect Pitch........... When you toss an accordian in the dumpster and it lands on a banjo.
I saw him at the 1969 VietNam Moratorium march in 1969.This was after Flatt and Scruggs had dissolved their partnership, in part because of political and musical disagreements. Flatt preferred traditional bluegrass while Scruggs sought to take his playing in new directions, which he did with his sons in the Earl Scruggs Revue, whom I saw in concert in 1973 at the University of Virginia, opening for the Allman Brothers. I recommend the DVD Earl Scruggs Bluegrass Legend. It traces his career, and gives us some fine performances with such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez,Doc Watson, and Bill Monroe. Also,The High Lonesome Sound, the Story Of Bluegrass is recommended for how Scruggs' banjo style made bluegrass as we know it today, turning it from "the instrument of the clowns of country music" into the major part of bluegrass it is today.
